Marco Rubio Wants Ideas on Immigration; Here's A Few
Town Hall ^ | May 5, 2013 | Derek Hunter

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. wrote an op-ed in this week’s Wall Street Journal inviting public input on the issue. Here are mine.

Dear Senator Rubio,

Why does immigration reform have to be “comprehensive?” Can’t we just fix the aspects of our broken system everyone agrees on and debate the rest later?

The need for an increase in the number of high-skilled H1B visas is a simple fix that could be done tomorrow. This would help keep high paying, hi-tech jobs in this country and may eventually lead to the return of some that have been outsourced. That’s an easy win.

That our current system for legal immigration is too slow and out of date is beyond argument. Reforming and streamlining it would be another tap-in putt that could be done quickly and easily.

Border security should be another no-brainer. Maintaining our sovereignty should be beyond partisan dispute. Sadly, it’s not.

The insistence by you and your fellow “Gang of 8” members that all of the points everyone agrees on will get a vote only if a “pathway to citizenship” is created for the illegal aliens already here is where you lose me.

I realize you and your fellow reformers don’t like the term “illegal alien,” but I don’t care. It’s accurate and truthful. Liberals play word games; that you would too is disturbing.

That they came here only to find a better life for their families is irrelevant. If that is justification for awarding the greatest gift this nation can bestow on someone, what does it say about those who wait to come legally.

And, perhaps more disturbing, I see nothing in your legislation about sanctuary cities and states. The federal government, even when willing, can do only so much enforcement on its own.

here's an idea..

NO AMNESTY!

no citizenship for illegals OR their anchor babies!

I'd be willing to give them a temporary green card if they pay a fine and action is taken to either wipe their names from the current voter rolls and/or bar them from illegally registering to vote in the future. I want them photo’d and I'd and I want them to agree in writing to wave the American citizenship claim of any child they have while working in this country.

"Beyond argument"? Is that a joke?

In what way is it "too slow"? We don't need any more immigrants for at least twenty years - fifty would be better. I suppose waiting fifty years might be "too slow". But now? Now is "too fast" - much, much too fast.

May I add:

No services to illegals except emergency medical care necessary to return them to to their country.

No drivers licenses

Sanctuary cities will have their federal funds stopped.

I agree with you, this is not our problem. Unless they were totally without family ties in their home country, they voluntarily broke family ties to come here. Sending them back would actually be restoring long term family ties if that were our our concern.

Although most immigrants do benefit from coming to this country, that should never be our overriding objective. Immigration should be for the benefit of the country, not for the benefit of the immigrant. We are no longer an under populated frontier country with a need for a large number of immigrants.

Thank you, Derek Hunter, for your most excellent, much needed to be heard, response to Marco Rubio.

Hey Rush, Sean, Mark...if Marco Rubio was what he posed himself to be, and y'all keep saying he is, he would have written what Derek Hunter wrote himself, instead of asking someone he represents to tell him what to say.

You three used to know that...what happened to you guys?

Therodore Roosevelt on immigration.
TS—ASSIMILATION OF. Where immigrants, or the sons of immigrants, do not heartily and in good faith throw in their lot with us, but cling to the speech, the customs, the ways of life, and the habits of thought of the Old World which they have left, they thereby harm both themselves and us. If they remain alien elements, unassimilated, and with interests separate from ours, they are mere obstructions to the current of our national life, and, moreover, can get no good from it themselves. In fact, though we ourselves also suffer from their perversity, it is they who really suffer most. It is an immense benefit to the European immigrant to change him into an American citizen. To bear the name of American is to bear the most honorable of titles; and whoever does not so believe has no business to bear the name at all, and, if he comes from Europe, the sooner he goes back there the better.Besides, the man who does not become Americanized nevertheless fails to remain a European, and becomes nothing at all. The immigrant cannot possibly remain what he was, or continue to be a member of the Old World society. If he tries to retain his old language, in few generations it becomes a barbarous jargon; if he tries to retain his old customs and ways of life, in a few generations he becomes an uncouth boor. He has cut himself off from the Old World, and cannot retain his connection with it; and if he wishes ever to amount to anything he must throw himself heart and soul, and without reservation, into the new life to which he has come. We cannot afford to permit squalid over crowding or the kind of living system which makes impossible the decencies and necessities of life. We cannot afford the low wage rates and the merely seasonal industries which mean the sacrifice of both individual and family life and morals to the industrial machinery. MMIGRANTS—OBLIGATION OF. We should provide for every immigrant, by day-schools for the young and night-schools for the adult, the chance to learn English; and if after, say, five years he has notlearned English, he should be sent back to the land from whence he came. . . . We should demand fullperformance of duty from them. Every man of themshould be required to serve a year with the colors, like our native-born youth, before being allowed to vote.Nothing would do more to make him feel an American among his fellow Americans, on an equality of rights,of duties, and of loyalty to the flag.

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Good idea.

Specific suggestions:
Deport all illegals, especially those who have been here a long time.
Put the military on the border.
Stop all welfare and other services to illegal aliens.
Do not allow illegal aliens to hold jobs.
No anchor-baby benefits to illegal aliens.

I have long held this same view. We don’t have the money to feed, clothe, house, educate and medically treat everyone who is here illegally. If we send someone home who has a job here, that is paid “under the table”, this frees up a job for someone to take who is on welfare, turning a drain on the state into a tax paying citizen. Win-win.

The Junta de Ocho's plan is an unmitigated political (10's of millions of new Democrats) and economic ($Billions of additional costs the US cannot afford) disaster.

It needs to be strangled in its crib.
