PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

The accidental death of the Perry County K-9 dog who died after being locked in his handler's patrol car overnight has many people calling for his job.

About three weeks ago, Napo, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, was found dead in the patrol car. His handler, Steve Verret, had apparently forgot the dog was in the vehicle.

Reaction from around the state from animal advocates and others has been one of shock and anger.

"Certainly it was a very unfortunate situation all the way around," said Katherine Sammons, Founder Mississippi Animal Advocate Group. "I have known a lot of K-9 officers in my time and that all have been really great people who love their animals and treat them like family. I'm sure this officer feels terrible about what happened."

When news of the death hit the Internet Thursday hundreds of people responded with outrage, thinking it unbelievable that Verret could forget the dog was in the car. Many called for him to be fired and charged with neglect.

He's an LEO.

A different set of standards applies to people who are above the law.

I agree, Off with his job!

These dogs are cops first and dogs second. If the officer is so Fn stupid to forget his partner, he has no ability nor business to be serving the public’s protection.

At the very least charge him for destroying county property ..... He was off duty, didn’t protect what was issued to him etc .... A good drug or bomb dog will set one back a pretty penny in Perry County.

Then fire the dumbass...

I talked to a PCSO K9 SGT just a month or so ago about this happening. Here, the K9 trucks are equipped with a system that after a predetermined time limit, a fan comes on, the rear window roll down and the horn starts blowing. He claims the county spends about $10,000 (Ten Grand) to outfit each vehicle.
As he says, not only is the dog really more than his partner, they are very expensive.
Too expensive for some Barney Fife to just leave locked in a hot car to die.

I say the deputy should not only be fired, but charged with animal cruelty.

yes he should.

I bet he gets more tv air time and angry letters than Kermit Gosnell.

At the very least he should be charged with the same charges you or I would be charged with.. Animal cruelty, neglect and a few others that they always throw in when Joe Blow does this.

In most states, a police dog is considered a full-fledged police officer. The felony for killing a police dog is far more serious that the charges for typical animal cruelty in almost all locations.

Yet when a drunk police officer leaves his K9 in a hot car to die miserably, the dog's death is just regarded as lost equipment.

Equal protection under the law, my ass.

Yep ... Agree !

...Also ment to say “charged for animal neglect / cruelty and charged for cost replacement associated court costs etc “ then fired for being a dumbass.....

Just my opinion.....

In my view he killed his partner.

At the least he should pay restitution for the animal, its training and be fired.

Wheres PETA when you need them. Off worrying about a spider....

Do they take the dogs home at night, or kennel them at the police dept.?

If the latter, it’s easier to understand, but no less unforgivable. I wouldn’t want to see him fired, but I’d never let him work the canine unit again. Actions have consequences. You have to take responsibility. Unless you’re Hillary. She doesn’t know the meaning of the word (hey, b***h, Tojo took responsibility!).

If the former, how the heck do you overlook the dog not getting out of the car with you, not going inside with you, not spending the evening with you, not getting fed and/or watered by you? As a dog owner myself, those are almost hard-wired habits for me. Hard to see how anyone could forget.

Skip that.

He is not someone to be trusted.

How in the heck do you not notice your constant companion isn’t in the house and needs to take his nightly dump or should have been fed?

If I were a cop I’d refuse to work with him or eve roll call with him.

From your perspective as a dog owner, it's hard to see how anyone could forget.

However, this is the kind of thing an that an alcoholic or oxy addict dog owner could easily do.

Something tells me there might be more than just stupidity at work here.
