BURLINGTON, Vt. -
A Burlington High School teacher is due in court Monday afternoon on charges of sexually exploiting a minor.
School officials say Giovanna Yaranga, a Spanish teacher at BHS for 15 years, has been placed on administrative leave after allegations she had an inappropriate relationship with a student. Sources tell Channel 3 News Yaranga had sex with a 17-year-old male student. Though 17 is above the legal age of consent, the exploitation statute prohibits people in authority positions from having sexual relations with people under their guidance. It's a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
Statement from Jeanne Collins, Burlington Superintendent:
"This deeply upsetting news affects our entire community. Please be assured that the safety of our students is the District's priority. The District had no evidence of physical improprieties or sexual misconduct by Ms. Yaranga. The faculty, staff and administration are well aware of their obligations as mandatory reporters of child abuse and have and will continue to fully comply with those requirements. Policy and procedures are in place to address personnel behaviors of concern, and hiring procedures include criminal background checks, abuse registry checks and reference checks. To reiterate, the District will do nothing that it believes will compromise the legal process underway or the safety and well-being of Burlington students."

Now we need a look at the young man. And we need to hear the court case when they can ask the boy if he felt exploited, or if possibly he was the exploiter.
Now wait a second - it’s awfully early in the afternoon to be making that sort of call with beer goggles on.
Yeah I agree, so not guilty especially with a little makeup....
