Just got this in email tonight, and thought I'd pass it on to my fellow Texans. There's an important vote coming up on Wednesday, 8 May in the Texas Senate regarding smart meters. This is a call to contact your state Senator regarding this important vote.
The email:
To my Friends in Texas – I’m going to just ask you to trust me! Most of you on this list know that I’m not into “radical” stuff – and many know that although I have passed along a little info opposing Smart Meters in the past, it has definitely not been a passionate cause for me. Until now.
In the past week, at two different meetings, I’ve heard some very reasoned and intelligent presentations by educated and informed people whom I deeply respect, that have convinced me that I definitely do not want a smart meter on my house, and feel no one should!
I’m not into the medical reasons (though I’ve seen enough presentations on this by intelligent people to agree that these can pose serious problems to some). It’s the presentations regarding security risks, hacking problems, privacy matters, huge potential for outside control (already happening in some places), and on and on, that are making me passionate.
The attachments will give you plenty of background. Read it all if you have time. Or trust me! The important thing is to call and email your state Senator (and any others you have time for) today or tomorrow.
URGE THEM TO VOTE YES ON SB241 ON WEDNESDAY!

TALKING POINTS WHEN YOU CALL:
PLEASE Vote in favor of SB241 !
This bill gives the citizens the right to choose whether or not we have a monitoring and control computer on the side of our house.
Or, if it has already been installed without providing full disclosure or securing permission, this bill also enables us to have the smart meter removed, if we do not want it.
Regarding the speculated cost of the opt-out provision, this bill recognizes that charging consumers to pay extra not to participate in a non-mandatory program whose benefits do not outweigh the risks nor the increased costs is irrational and irresponsible. Paying extra to protect ne's health or privacy or security of personal information is unjustified.
The bill allows us to keep our lifestyle choices (how we use our electricity) private and secure from others who have no business knowing or controlling what we do in our own home.
This bill protects Texas' grid independence; maintaining Texas' sovereignty over our natural resources is paramount and nonpartisan. By establishing a joint legislative study committee, this bill also recognizes the lack of consideration given to the potential for very serious negative health effects associated with electromagnetic frequencies.
We very much hope we can we count your support for the bill as it is written - with no amendments, repeat, no amendments!

Health concerns are the least of people's concerns about smart meters, Bob. Mostly, people are concerned about the insidious information gathering and violation of privacy these devices bring.

But I wonder...if your electric company (I’m in a co-op) tells you that they ARE installing smart meters how do you tell them no?
I really think they would pull my service for refusing. Although I have a ton of kerosene lamps..how am I gonna keep the computer running?

Berdie, I'm far from an expert on this subject, but from what I've heard, it can be darn near impossible to keep the electric utilities from installing this equipment, which THEY own and monitor, on YOUR private property.
That's one of the central issues this bill seeks to address.
You shouldn't have to accept the installation of a device which collects information of a private nature on you and your family, as a condition of doing business with the provider of an essential service.

Not a fan of lawsuits but I think that is how you tell them no. I doubt any contract between you and your electric provider included them having the right to gather detailed information about you and your home. I think it's more like they provide electric power and you pay the bill and that's about where it stops.

Uh what information would that be? You use more electricity when you are home and less when you are away at work. You gotta realize that your life is pretty mundane and boring and nobody would really want to analyze it. There are a lot more important issues to be concerned with and the government liberals are probably happy that people are taking the time to concern themselves with this issue.
I thought the same thing, until I started reading a bit about smart meters. They don't call them 'smart' for no reason. They collect a whole lot more metric data about you than you'd be comfortable with, if you knew.
You could install a deep cycle battery system as used in solar, and wind type systems. The batts would be charged off the grid and used to buffer the power used in the house. This makes the smart meter data completely inaccurate and worthless.
I’ve had one on my home for the last two years. No difference. My point is there are a lot bigger fish to fry.
Same here for the last two years. If anything I have been able to monitor my own use and have been able to slightly reduce overall consumption.
So they can’t call their state Senator then move on to the next fish?
You don’t. They will do it anyway. I told them no; and they said tough. It blew my electricity and I, not them (emphasis here) had to pay a 1,000 bucks to get it fixed. It’s quite a scam.

They (Atmos) installed the new meter at my house about two years ago, also. I’ve lived here for 27 years and do the bill-averaging payments. I have seen no change in my normal billings with the new meter. .....What kind of new data could they collect with the new meters, other than peak usage times at my house?
