Teacher stomps on an American flag, get $85,000 settlement

How's your outrage quotient today? A teacher in South Carolina who stomped on an American flag to demonstrate freedom in America and subsequently was forced to resign, has agreed not to press a legal challenge in his case in return for a settlement of $85,000.

Lexington-Richland 5 paid former Chapin High teacher Scott Compton √ $85,000 to avoid a legal challenge, part of a settlement that led to his resignation after he stomped on an American flag during a class lesson.

The payment is on top of Compton's salary that will be paid through June 7, even though he has been out of the classroom since December. School officials did not provide Compton's salary Monday, but their plan pays teachers with his 12 years' experience $43,340 to $59,647 a year.

Lexington-Richland 5 taxpayers also will foot the bill for more than $31,500 in attorney fees, records obtained by The State newspaper under a state Freedom of Information Act request show.

The $85,000 payment was described as "a compromise and resolution of disputed claims," the records say.

It was not disclosed as part of Compton's resignation, announced March 27, a decision that the settlement says is for "family and personal reasons" not spelled out. "Prior to his resignation, attorneys for Mr. Compton informed district attorneys that he had prepared a complaint for filing in federal court," Lexington-Richland 5 spokesman Mark Bounds said.

"Based on financial considerations related to anticipated legal fees to defend such a suit, the insurer made the decision to make a monetary (offer) to Mr. Compton. He accepted the offer."

Stomping on an American flag is not the way most of us would have demonstrated how free we are in the US.

No wonder William B Travis left South Carolina to die in the Alamo. He was obviously the only man in that state, and he wanted to die with other real men.

This is outrageous, but look at the bright side. He’s GONE. He will not be sulleying our children’s minds, unless he gets a post at a private school. Some things are worth paying for.

He should have shown some real courage and stomped on a Koran.

All sounds fair to me, as long as he picks up his check from an old shooting buddy of mine (ex Army Special Forces, Viet Nam, recently told his cancer is terminal.)

Win, win situation. This guy gets his money, my friend gets to leave with a bang. And the world is a better place.

EXACTLY. $85,000 would be used up in less than two years of salary. they are MUCH better off doing this to get rid of him, and NO DISTRICT outside Chicago is going to hire this clown now with his actions plus his litigation history.

$85,000? That's chump change. This subhuman, murderous, POS terrorist has made millions:

You're funny. But you know full-well who controls the education systems in virtually every State.

(What is it with you TX-un conservative FReepers continually picking on SC? You want to go it alone?)

He could possibly find greener pastures in uptown Manhattan. A certain university takes pride in such as a professor.

Every time I see that picture from The Times I believe, the more I’d like to see that guy in my 12 power Redfield.

He may have been trying to make a point about the how the First Amendment protects unpopular speech and probably would have won his case on the same grounds, so it is worth it for the school district to avoid further litigation. They should have found some other reason for getting rid of him.

No but it would be deserved if all his students and their parents started saying he stomped on a Koran. We know the muslims like to get whipped up over a rumor and it would certainly make this little rat sweat for his $85k.

As a Texan with a teacher wife I will second that statement. From what I have seen we are hardly in a position to cast stones when it comes to libs in education. We have a decent state board to develope cirriculum but the school districts, especially in the big cities, are infected with libscum.

I personally know of a South Carolina fella who has a non-union teacher wife working to be involved with education at the State level. School districts usually follow the State Ed. Department's lead on decisions that relate to curriculum and policies that have an impact on student learning in SC. This shapely young conservative lady would like to influence those State-level education decisions, but I repeat myself.

He’s gonna need that $85K to pay for all the future reconstructive surgery he’s going to need.
