The New Truth About the Cop Shot in Watertown: Friendly-Fire in a Getaway
TheAtlanticWire ^ | April 07, 2013 | Alexander Abad-Santos

Posted on 05/07/2013 12:05:07 PM PDT by Daffynition

The way the nation met 33-year-old MBTA Transit Police officer Richard Donohue was — like much of the conflicting information from that night of mayhem in Watertown, Massachusetts — violent, fast, and scary: He was exchanging fire with the Tsarnaev brothers, the story went, and he took a gun shot to his right thigh from the Boston bombing suspects — an injury that would see Donohue lose all of his own blood, sever three blood vessels, send him into cardiac arrest, and almost die. Now comes a more complete picture, with more eyewitnesses telling a new story, that Donohue was probably shot by a fellow police officer.

The Boston Globe has a long story in today's paper with new accounts from Watertown residents who witnessed "the climactic moment in the confrontation, when Dzhokhar Tsarnaev drove between two groups of police officers amid police gunfire" in the early morning of April 19. Jane Dyson lives less than 200 feet from where Donohue went down:

"A black SUV appeared, and rapid gun fire was focused on the vehicle," Dyson wrote in a statement provided to the Globe, referring to the vehicle Tsarnaev allegedly drove in his escape. "It appeared to me that an individual at the corner [of the street] fell to the ground and had probably been hit in the gunfire."

My impression has been that the boat was a block or two outside of the perimeter. Not to say my impression is accurate, just that’s what it is.

I'm reminded of the moment that inspired Robert De Niro's character in Ronin to shame Sean Bean's character out of the ambush crew.

Thanks. Dzhokhar Unarmed at Capture, Watertown Boat Inside Lockdown Search Perimeter | BostInno.

That boat, of course, was the scene of Dzhokhar's eventual apprehension. It was also said to be outside the search perimeter scoured while Boston was on lockdown. That, it turns out, wasn't the case. "It was an area that should have been checked," said commissioner Davis, who confirmed the boat was in fact within the perimeter. "We are not sure how long he was in the boat. There was a pool of blood near where the car was dumped about four or five blocks away from the boat."

Pool of blood near the abandoned car and Bomber only 5 blocks away.

Given the family’s connection to the CIA it is unclear whether he was going to be allowed to get away or he was just going to be killed - until the boat owner thwarted the plan.

After all the hero worship ends, we are left with a hard fact. The terrorists were armed with one pistol and Boston PD could not win that encounter.
The extended shootout was unable to stop them both, or kill even one, (before his brother ran him over). Then as the younger terrorist fled in the car-unarmed- and hid in the boat, the next 2 fusliades were all still directed towards an unarmed terrorist.

While there are legitimate reasons for shooting at a bomber that has hidden himself from you, such as provoking him to detonate a bomb, etc... that is not what Boston PD or FBI was doing. They just cannot shoot. The abysmally poor marksmanship from Boston is a national embarrassment.
The lack of a gun culture produces cops who cannot shoot well under stress.

The fact remains, with the city in lockdown, and 10,000 cops swarming, and with little tanks, they still could not win a gunfight, against a single unarmed man on the run.

Our FRiend DesertRhino makes a interesting point:

"Boston's Finest" turned an erstwhile quiet suburb into a scene from Boondock Saints, with hundreds of rounds being fired (how about those ten-round mags, eh?), and no one cared where the stray rounds were going?

Given the - and I use the word loosely - "marksmanship" demonstrated, it's a wonder why there wasn't a collateral damage body count from bystanders.

If it wasn't for the fact he was hiding behind the boat's engine compartment he would have been filled with as many holes and the boat's hull. You can hear on the police radio that they were lamenting the arrival of the media and that they couldn't finish the job.

I remember reading somewhere that #2 was hiding in a nearby shed. The cops swept the area and moved on. At that point, #2 crawled into the boat.

If so, I guess the question is, “How did they miss him in the shed?”

The fedburinv was heading the investigation due to it being a “terror” incident. No?

Given their past days performance I would have had to give them another Million Rounds and a day and a half to finish the job. Or one homeowner with a Deer rifle about 10 seconds. of course the UAVs are optional.

Why the sudden interest?

It happened so long ago.
