In less than two decades, the gun murder rate has been nearly cut in half. Other gun crimes fell even more sharply, paralleling a broader drop in violent crimes committed with or without guns.
The number of gun killings dropped 39% between 1993 and 2011, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported in a separate report released Tuesday. Gun crimes that werent fatal fell by 69%.
Despite the remarkable drop in gun crime, only 12% of Americans surveyed said gun crime had declined compared with two decades ago, according to Pew, which surveyed more than 900 adults this spring. Twenty-six percent said it had stayed the same, and 56% thought it had increased.

Has gun violence dropped once again now that MS13 has taken the drug trade away from the Crips?
They’re going to continue getting results like this as long as they continue polling low information voters who get their information from 30 second sound bites on the network nightly news.
“The economy has plunged, but Americans think it is up.”
When will Americans learn?
If a crime is prevented because of a gun, it does not enter into the statistics. Prevention of crimes with guns has become so significant, that many armed criminals are using “cheap shot” attacks, and “initiate robbery by firing gun at victim”, robberies.
That is, they are no longer assuming that their potential victim is unarmed, so want to disable or even kill them before they could defend themselves. This means they accept far more severe punishment if caught, for robbery and attempted murder, or murder; rather than just robbery alone.
The alternative is to risk being killed themselves. This changes the whole equation.
When you figure in the ratio of guns purchased over the last 20 years to the number of “gun crimes” committed the number is even lower.
The leftists in Big Media and Big Government have been lying to people for so long that they believe truth is falsehood, and falsehood is truth.
Guns prevent crime.
The period of time in the study correlates closely with the adoption of ccw by the majority of the states (45?). It is really remarkable how ccws have cooled things off.
Ok, this is making me nervous. I’m starting to see articles forthrightly critical of The One, and now even the L.A. Times is reporting the truth about falling gun death stats??
Something’s up, y’all. The leftmedia just ain’t acting natural all of a sudden.
A sign of the end times? Seriously though, whenever I see a little common sense and truth leak into the MSM babble I always wait for the pendulum to swing back the other way.
[[That is, they are no longer assuming that their potential victim is unarmed, so want to disable or even kill them before they could defend themselves.]]
Perhaps victims shoudkl do the same- jjst assume someoen with a gun IS goign to use it, and shoot first before perp gets a chance to even open their worthless mouth
Americans think that gun crime is up because the corrupt media, including Obama guard dog Fx News, misleads Americans to think that way to promote 2nd Amendment-ignoring gun legislation imo.
“Americans think that gun crime is up because the corrupt media”
They think it’s up because TV shows and movies show it everywhere, on purpose. You can’t trip over a show these days without some gun-toting democrap playing some kind of “crafty right-wing killer”.
Democrats wailing about gun crime — up 238%!!
My thoughts exactly. I looked outside to see if my house had left the planet.
Most big papers are in big cities run by dems . Typically those have high gun crime rates.
They live in their own little bubble.
(I can’t believe Nixon won, I dont know a single person who voted for him)
Gun crime is up the past couple of years in certain areas, but those are the areas that always have obscene crime rates — black majority areas.
The proper answer is “situational awareness”. Most people, even most black people, are suspicious of a group of young black men hanging out. It is wise to give them a wide berth and to make sure you are not being followed.
However, an individual is just as worthy of attention if they are carrying a baseball bat, or approaching from an angle where they could deliver a cheap shot.
[[Most people, even most black people, are suspicious of a group of young black men hanging out]]
True, butm ost peopel are also suspicious of a group of white male teens too- the fact is that teeens are bored and look to get hteir kicks wherever they cna and at whomever’s expense they want-
Some of it is situational, but a lot of it is statistical.
Respectable black people are very apprehensive around black teenagers they don’t know, because black people are *more* likely to be attacked by young black men then are other races.
If a white person or Hispanic is seen by an aggressive group of young black men, they are seen as being of more risk to fight back, unless they are alone, obviously drunk, with nobody like them in the area.
There is the “weirdness” factor as well. Beyond a certain point, if somebody passing through their neighborhood looks or acts too different, that strangeness is seen as menacing, even dangerous. Often that is an accurate assessment. Even aggressive teenagers fear psychotics as out of their league.
I wonder if suicides are considered gun crimes?
