Schumer backs Rep. Israel's call to halt plastic guns made using 3-D printers

Sen. Charles Schumer said Monday he is putting his full support behind legislation aimed at stopping the production of undetectable plastic guns that can be made using relatively cheap 3-D printers.

A Texas-based libertarian group has successfully been able to produce a functioning plastic handgun using a 3-D printer that anyone could purchase, Schumer said. He said the group plans to post on the Internet how to go about making this cheap, but functioning weapon that could pass through metal detectors at airports and elsewhere.

Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he is joining Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) who has pushed for new legislation in this area.

"Right now, if you are a terrorist, you can buy one of these 3-D printers and make guns," Schumer said. If you are a felon, you can make these guns. It's perfectly legal. We have to stop this."(continued)

How many times can the plastic barrel take a round before degrading?

Absolutely right Sen. Schumer sir!
http://defcad.org/liberator/
Citizens should have access to such information.
http://defcad.org/liberator/
I’m certain you will be able to stop the spread of this nonsense with your new legislation.
http://defcad.org/liberator/
I can’t imagine who would even want to have such a thing.
http://defcad.org/liberator/
I mean, most people don’t even have the equipment to make use of such a file.
http://defcad.org/liberator/
Yet.

Only one but the barrels are a quick and easy change out.

Watch the you tube video. It's pretty fascinating.

Schumer is getting panicky; he knows he is high on the WTSHTF target list. He doesn’t want to be at risk from a plastic gun!

I read the barrel is good for 5-6 shots of .380. Then you throw it away and insert a new barrel. It’s designed to be easy to replace. I think barrels can be made in different calibers. But not big calibers. Yet. This was just a proof of concept model.

Knowing how the Internet culture works, it’s just a matter of time before someone designs a semi-auto version. Changes in design and materials will certainly bring bigger calibers into play. I can see someone developing a material specifically to print barrels that withstand high pressures. Watch and see how clever geeks and hobbyists are when presented with a challenge.

They are not undetectable you idiots.

There are plenty of metal parts in the damn thing from the barrel to the receiver and the spring at a minimum ...

Normal productions guns would be. These are completely plastic except for a nail used for the firing pin. You're not gonna get more than one or two shots out of one of these things, max. The idea is similar to the 'liberator' we dropped into Europe during WWII. You use the disposable gun to get a real one from the occupying forces.

The description of the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto in the book "Unintended Consequences" is a really good description of this.

This is really just a stunt to prove it can be done. Like someone upthread said, it's not really even new. Anyone competent with machine tools can make something similar out of sheet metal and a piece of pipe. Personally I'd feel better using something homemade out of metal, but if it's all you have to get the tools, of liberty, plastic will do.

One metal part .. firing pin made from ground down nail.

Pretty good bet that a small piece of some type of common ceramic/composite rod could replace even that.

A country boy CAN survive!

That rifle might have led to the divorce, Black Walnut dust from sanding gets in the air and turns everything sort of reddish, LOL, including the laundry.

I made 3 with Black Walnut then switched to Maple, but it was already too late!

I don’t expect to see that, the .380 is probably pushing the limit.

Schumer is going to mess around and really piss people off.

Every time one of the idiots says "ban" another 100,000 people will sign on at NRA.

A lot of the new NRA members are democrats, lots of them believed Obama before the election, but they don't believe him now.

schumer is selling fear.

fear is all he has to sell. Fear he will make a law, so give him money to not make a certain law/vote.

Think about it. Schumer awards government contract. With home printing, the value of his contracts goes down. What if the army/navy/marines start printing parts needing fewer government contracts.

Schumer has been declawed.
