Ted Cruz Seeks to Ban Illegal Immigrants in U.S. from Citizenship
US News and World Report ^ | MAy 8, 2013 | Rebekah Metzler

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a newly elected Republican with a penchant for making headlines, filed an amendment that would bar undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States from ever earning citizenship.

There are an estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally, and a bipartisan immigration reform measure would create a pathway to citizenship over the course of 13 years by requiring those people to pay penalties and back taxes, as well as learn English. Conservatives opposed to reform decry the path as amnesty, but Democrats say they will not support reform that does not cope with the immigrants already living in the U.S.

Cruz also filed amendments that he says would "strengthen border security measures; reform the high-skilled temporary worker program; modernize, streamline and expand legal immigration; and prohibit federal, state or local entitlement benefits for those here illegally."(continued)

Yes, the leftist media would view it that way while simultaneously ignoring Benghazi and other democRAT failures.

Keep reading. Pat Leahy wants illegals to be able to bring their same-sex partners in and get them citizenship.

If they are somehow given amnesty at the very least let them be banned from voting for 25 years.

IIRC, the Manchin-Toomey AYES was 54 in my book....that's a win, technically.

The problem is that Reid did not get 60 votes which could vote down a filibuster attempt.

So we have a “WIN” now called a “LOSS” because the Democrats did not want to stand behind the efficacy of the measure because “FEELINGS” are transitory....i.e., DOES NOT LAST. Were they to proceed, people might have more time to examine the bill, find out all the particulars, and likely dissent while the Senate is in the midst of filibuster.

Pat Leahy, D-Vt., filed a measure that would grant immigration rights to same-sex couples. .. And while it's highly unlikely the Democratically-controlled committee would adopt Cruz's controversial amendments, Leahy's offering very well could be included. Gotta lick the boots of the sexual deviants..

They don’t want citizenship: They want free money. They are Mexicans primarily and do not want to be Americans.

But the DEMOCRATS need them to be citizens. Even if you had to give them handouts in perpetuity, that would be better than citizenship, because with citizenship, the Anti-Rights (except any kind of kinky sex) Democrats would never lose another national election.

I don’t know whats so hard about securing the border and enforcing current law.

Cut off the inflow and the problem solves itself over a decade or two. No mass deportations required, just shut off the spigot and let nature take its course.

I agree that illegals should not have a “path to citizenship” other than, possibly, military service.

I’ll see Cruz’s amendment on the 11 (yes, we all know it’s more) million here now and raise it to make it permanent for any future illegals. Take away the political angle in this corrupt bill and there’s no reason to do anything but enforce the current law.

Its a much truer definition of the oft misused term “Amnesty”.

In the democrat/RINO world “Amnesty” means keep breaking the law and we’ll look the other way.

Exactly correct policy IF you are thinking about what’s right for America.

You can’t possibly stop illegal immigration by rewarding 30 million illegal immigrants.

They should have to leave if they have any interest in applying for legal entry.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. There needs to be a new immigration status created called "Permanent Guest Worker."

It is given to those here illegally who have met the rest of the "amnesty" requirements. It allows permanent residency, but a Permanent Guest Worker cannot apply for citizenship just as one here on a Tourist or Student Visa cannot apply for US Citizenship.

If they want citizenship, they must surrender their Permanent Guest Worker visa, return to their country of citizenship, and apply for Permanent Residency like everybody else.

Yow.

Now that’s the way to take the fight to them: see you one and raise you two.

For those of you from the Cruz staff reading this, here’s another little point that never gets made: if Amnesty does pass, will the illegals who are amnestied have to allocute to the original crime?

If so, will they have a record?

If you were a Citizen you would have that. Even if you weren’t punished (allocution is usually a public admission of sin linked to a grant of leniency).

In what upside down world would citizens have more serious consequences for their actions then illegal aliens?

Will there be a general amnesty for everyone in the United States convicted of a federal misdemeanor at some point in their lives once this Mother of All Amnesties passes?

If not, why not? Do illegal aliens constitute a Special Class of Privileged Persons, able to do certain federal crimes at will with no risk of any consequence?

Ted Cruz on being a “schoolyard bully”: I do so appreciate Harry Reid’s candor

posted at 9:21 pm on May 7, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Heh. For a quick addendum to Mary Katharine’s earlier post chronicling the continuing Senatorial drama with the indignant claims of procedural “bullying” that Majority Leader Harry Reid is leveling at Sen. Ted Cruz, you know Cruz wasn’t going to take that one lying down. Try if you will, but there’s just no denying that Sen. Reid has been coming off as irate and condescending while Cruz is cool, calm, collected, and — what’s that word again? — oh yeah, civil. The man impeccably lays out his case, and is it just me, or does it sound like this “very junior senator” has considerably more gravitas than his elder colleague? Via RCP:

I rise today in praise of Majority Leader Harry Reid. Yesterday, our esteemed Majority Leader said the following — quote — ‘My friend from Texas is like the schoolyard bully. He pushes everyone around and is losing. And instead of playing the game according to the rules, he not only takes the ball home with him, but he changes the rules.’ Today, Leader Reid continued his demonstration of civility, referring to me as the — quote — ‘very junior Senator from Texas.’ As I noted yesterday, the Senate is not a schoolyard. Setting aside the irony of calling someone a bully and then shouting them down when they attempt to respond, today I wish simply to commend my friend from Nevada for his candor.
