In last nights Athletics-Indians game, the As trailed by one run with two outs in the ninth inning.
Up came shortstop Adam Rosales to face Indians closer Chris Perez.
On a 1-1 pitch, Rosales blasted a 93 mile per hour fastball to left center field for a game tying home run.
Only the umps didnt see it that way. They ruled the ball had hit the outfield wall, giving Rosales a double.
After a brief protest from As manager Bob Melvin, the umpire crew headed for the replay room to make sure of their call.
Replays definitively showed the ball had indeed been a home run, hitting a rail in the stands several feet above the outfield wall, and had bounced back in.
Pretty clear on replays, pretty obvious call.
Only umpire chief Angel Hernandez got it wrong and somehow did not see the ball blatantly bounce off of the railing and stuck with the initial ruling, costing the As a game-tying home run and ultimately the game.
What a joke. Replay is supposed to offer a chance to reverse blown calls and take out a bit of the human element A.K.A. human error on important, close calls. Not so with Mr. Hernandez, who has a history of trying to make the game more about himself than the teams on the field.
This one wasnt even a judgment call, it was in his face that he should reverse the call and he didnt.
Watch the whole ordeal HERE.
My friend was so mad about this. It seems like all the league’s officiating is getting worse. Why doesn’t the NBA just declare the San Antonio Spurs the winners of their series with the Golden State Warriors? Why bother playing the games?
A’s are so worried about YESTERDAY’S call, they run out and get thumped by the Tribe again 9-2. Thus ends the sweep.
This same umpire screwed up another home run review against the A’s a few nights earlier.
Angel Hernandez is nothing compared to Big Ten basketball referee “TV Ted” Valentine.
Didn’t see the incident in question, but Angel Hernandez is AWFUL
still bums me that the official scorekeeper didn’t call that an error instead of leaving it a hit - at least the dude would have got a no-hitter....
In the end, it may be the one thing Armamdo Gallaraga is truly famous for. I don’t even know if he’s still playing.
Somedays the diamond, some days the coal.
Yeah, the A’s got robbed. But who cares? Go Tribe!!!
We Cleveland fans have suffered for waaaay too long to worry about how we get the W’s these days.
Gallaraga is with the Louisville Bats, AAA affiliate of the Cincy Reds.
Angel Hernandez probably had money on the game.
!! That’s a very good point
Angel Hernandez is still a ump? Wow I remember getting upset with his calls when I used to watch baseball with my Mom, and she has been dead for 10 years now.
Ted Valentine is THE WORST.
First thing I thought of too, crip. Where is that pitcher today?
Years ago I was watching a MLB game when a batter from the home team hit a long fly ball—the outfielder from the visiting team caught the ball by leaning over the railing into the stands, but before he could pull his arm back and show that he had caught the ball, a fan snatched the ball from his glove, thereby causing the home team batter to be credited with a home run. None of the umpires saw what was happening although the TV viewers could see it.
I thought Papa Grande was headed for “Where are they now” territory but he’s back in top form.
