SAN FRANCISCO – A sailor has died after a boat practicing for the upcoming America's Cup races capsized in San Francisco Bay.

San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge says two people were seriously injured Thursday when the Artemis Racing catamaran capsized at about 1 p.m. near Treasure Island, a former naval station in the bay.

Talmadge says both were brought to shore and taken to the St. Francis Yacht Club, where paramedics performed CPR. One person was pronounced dead a short time later.

I wonder if the person that died was tied or secured to the railing or something like that and the sailboat flipped over and they couldn’t get unsecured and drowned. I believe that is what happen in the race up in Lake Michigan a year or two ago in a big storm.

High speed. Lots of lines to get tangled in. Especially on a cat that size (I had a Hobie 14 in the 80's. When you go over, it is fast, landing you in essentially sail and lines).

Catamarans aren’t boats. They are ugly stupid things that sometimes float.

I think they are incredibly beautiful. As for the racing models, like any super-high performance machine they can be dangerous when pushed to and past the edge, as happened here.

Catamarans float really well, even upside down. They often have positive flotation in them, so even if they have a hole in them they will float.

This is an unfortunate accident but it's not because the boat is a stupid thing. I watched a few hours of them racing on the bay, they are fantastic exciting racing machines. Like other racing machines like Formula 1 cars, they are somewhat dangerous.

"Catamarans aren’t boats. They are ugly stupid things that sometimes float."

Wrong. They are ugly, stupid things, that together with trimarans, hold nearly every long distance sailing speed record.
