'Act of faith' did not cost track team win, student's reaction to official did
An act of faith has cost an area track team a win and a chance to advance to the state championships.
This past weekend, the Columbus High School Mighty Cardinals had just won a boys relay race when a runner’s final gesture got them disqualified. As he was crossing the finish line, Derrick Hayes pointed up to the sky. His father believes he was giving thanks in a gesture to God.
“It was a reaction,” father KC Hayes said. “I mean you’re brought up your whole life that God gives you good things, you’re blessed.”
Columbus ISD Superintendent Robert O’Connor said the team had won the race by seven yards. It was their fastest race of the year.
Though O’Connor cannot say why the student pointed, he says it was against the rules that govern high school sports. The rules state there can be no excessive act of celebration, which includes raising the hands.

We used to call it celebrating before the PC crowd took over. I hate the NFL calls for “excessive celebration”. Bunch of wimps.

Thank you. As a former track coach, I called it correctly. One finger in the air after a victory is not any historic sign of Christianity.
That said, an athlete being exuberant after a victory should not be cause for a disqualification. If, as the official says, the young man was also disrespectful, then so be it.
There is a line between excitement at victory and a taunting celebration. It is not difficult to tell the difference.
So, he broke the rule, but it’s a rule looking for additional definition.
The obnoxious kid and his father are both saying there’s no story here. Christians in Texas are not a persecuted religious minority, or if they are, this is not an example of it. Just trying to do you all a favor to drop a story that has no merit and got sensationalized by some PR hacks.

Even after objectively reading the story I think most would conclude the punishment was way out of line, but indicative of more public officials out of control. From that standpoint I think it was an interesting story and good post. But then again, I think calling someone a ‘vile maggot’ is way out of line in response to being told to crawl back under your rock.
You do live under a rock if you read the articles and comfortably conclude that the story is wrong and the student was taunting and showboating. You are the only one who used those words and again, you do live under a rock if you think these school officials couldn’t have an agenda. And you chose to hyperventilate, knock a member of Free Republic, and side with the school officials? Yes, it’s conclusive, you do live under a rock.

Babble-ons living arrangements are not the topic of this thread. At the beginning of this thread, he correctly pointed out that this was a non story - but one freeper took issue with it not be documented with a link, and chose to get snippy about it. Kind of like what you are doing.
The links are out there, with quotes from both the boy and the boy’s parents. Babble on has it right. It’s a story about a kid who made a mistake. And had to face the consequences of his actions.

Did you read the section in the article wherein the official indicated the response from the kid was disrespectful? My reading indicated he was being warned to cease and desist the celebratory behavior and then behaved disrespectfully to the official.
That by itself is dq-worthy.

Funny that they didn’t release the video, huh? Because God knows that public school officials are beyond reproach. Geez, I mean it’s not like the kid was using his hand to imitate a gun. Then I would wholeheartedly agree with you that he should be banished from the school and probably the country.

I read every word of all stories and saw available video. We have different takes on the family. I took them as decent folks who just didn’t want to continue slopping in the mud with the media pigs. Something like I’m about to do right now...

Now wait a minute, both of you. I used ‘taunting’ on an earlier thread, and thus deserve to be included in the debate.
I got royally flamed by some self-professed Christians (not sure that they could be convicted of so - being based on the evidence of that thread).
Didn’t know there were so many fans of public officials, especially public school officials, here on Free Republic. Personally, I’m just not a fan of pc crap run amok. But then again, I don’t live under a rock.
You probably ought to seek psychiatric help about your hangup about geological structures.
