They may or may not advance further from this high point, but it has to be said the precedents aren’t encouraging. On at least five previous occasions in my lifetime there’s been a surge of support like this for a third party, in elections (local, European or parliamentary by-election) outside the general election cycle, and midway through the term of an unpopular government. In the past it’s been the Liberals (several times), the SDP and the Greens. Every time, come the next general election, we’ve reverted to the same old two-party status quo. You really have to go back to the rise of Labour a century ago for the last time the mould has was been broken.

I can’t argue that...I’ve seen it a bit over there too (BNP comes to mind...but they were screwed up, from what I saw).
