California governor urges faster immigration reform

(Reuters) - Wading into the national debate over immigration, California Governor Jerry Brown is pushing for a faster path to citizenship for the millions of people who are in the country illegally.

Brown's is the latest in a chorus of voices from the most populous U.S. state calling for swift enactment of reform - but also demanding that a provision that would delay full citizenship for 10 or more years be removed from the immigration overhaul legislation being considered in the U.S. Senate.

The delay is of particular concern to policymakers in California, because it means that the state's mostly poor illegal immigrants will be excluded for a decade from any federal financial support under the healthcare law known as Obamacare, as well as from programs such as food stamps and medicaid.

On May 12,2013...L.A. worries about immigration reform's cost to taxpayers..As Congress takes up immigration reform, Los Angeles County officials are voicing concerns that local taxpayers will be "left holding the bag" to pay for the brunt of healthcare and other services for the multitudes of immigrants who apply for citizenship.

Local and state officials believe the overhaul bill will encourage those in the country illegally to come out of the shadows and turn to local services during the proposed 13-year-long pathway to citizenship.

"The one thing that's really clear as day is that the federal government is going to be protecting itself against costs, and we're going to be left holding the bag," said Mark Tajima, an analyst with the county's chief administrative office.

In Washington last week for the start of the debate, county officials, including Supervisors Don Knabe and Zev Yaroslavsky, warned of a "major cost shift'' to state and local governments from the proposed legislation and pressed Congress to provide federal aid to help cover future costs.

Officials could not, however, provide a figure on the potential tab. Instead, as they made the rounds on Capitol Hill, they pointed to the $800 million the county received in the last big immigration overhaul signed by President Reagan in 1986.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), after meeting with county officials, brought up the county's concerns at the Judiciary Committee meeting and directed her staff to look into the possibility of creating a "state impact assistance" fund, similar to the $4 billion provided to local and state governments in the 1986 bill.

You missed it -- it happened during Brown's first term. What you're seeing now is a zombie. It's already eaten the brains of CA Democrat voters.

WTF is it America’s (we that work for a living) responsibility to feed, house and coddle these effing criminals? We needs laws that restrict those who suck the welfare teat from voting. Elected officials have lost their minds.

Note to Rubio: Expect more than a hundred 'Rats echoing this in the halls of congress, and the resulting bill will not look like anything you will recognize out of conference. It's time to abandon the gang-of-8! (ie, past time to abandon it, but now works too).

The Peoples’ Republik of Kalifornia spends/wastes over 9 Billion annually on ILLEGAL invaders. Gov Moonbeam should realize that cost will skyrocket should these ILLEGAL hordes be made citizens. Apparently he’s not that bright.

Ol'Jer Brown is trying to treat these folks like STATELESS REFUGEES.

They are NOT STATELESS REFUGEES. They are fully DOCUMENTED CITIZENS somewhere else.

There is simply no pressing reason whatsoever for them to be put on a path to citizenship, or anything else.

Proof that even if the GOP agreed with every proposal the Dems come up with, the Dems would add on more goodies.

It's a bidding war to the bottom with the Democrats and BOTH sides are using OUR money.

The GOP, the STUPID party.
