L.A. Schools: We Won’t Suspend Kids For Mouthing Off Anymore

In a groundbreaking resolution, the Los Angeles Unified District school board voted Tuesday to ban suspensions for “willful defiance,” making it the first district in the state to do so.

This decision will stop suspensions for a variety of misbehaviors—anything from mouthing off to teachers, eating food in the classroom, or violating the school dress code—which critics have maintained are too broad and arbitrarily enforced. Instead, starting next year, principals will install alternative disciplinary measures while students remain in school.

The ban in LAUSD, the second largest school district in the country, marks a major shift from a zero-tolerance policy for minor infractions.

“We know that taking kids out of school is not an effective solution for dealing with students who have behavioral issues,” said Tonna Onyendu, an organizer with the Liberty Hill Foundation, a nonprofit group that helped craft the proposal for LAUSD. “What’s worse,” he said, “is it leads to racial profiling in the classroom.”

Data collected by the U.S. Department of Education from schools around the nation shows that the zero-tolerance approach to school discipline has a discriminatory effect. African-American students are suspended from school more than three times as often as white students across all grade levels.

In LAUSD, African-American children make up nine percent of the student body, but they account for 26 percent of all suspensions, nearly half of which are for willful defiance offenses.

Seattle and New York City school districts faced civil rights investigations by the U.S. Department of Education for an alarming rise in suspension rates in recent years, particularly among African-American and Latino boys.

Seriously? What teacher in their right mind would continue to work there?

IOW is would be racist to suspend kids for mouthing off because a disproportionate number of those suspended are black.

Eric Holder was making rumbling sounds about going Federal on this

Schools collect money based on how many students attend school. Same with those getting school lunches.

They need bodies in seats.

why do libtards assume that it’s racial profiling that causes blacks to be suspended three times more than white students? why not consider that blacks are at least three times as disruptive and causing problems far more often than whites? geez, idiots rule.

The teachers should file hostile work environment complaints against the districts.

I am a firm believer in home-schooling or private schools. Public schools no longer allow the teaching of morality with the removal of religion as a guiding philosophy. As the children in the epic “Lord of The Flies” novel, when children have not been taught morality they will develop their own and it can be a very ugly thing. Cheating, violence, sex, disrespect for authority in schools all result from amoral upbringing. Parents should not rely on public schools to teach their children morality.

It’s hard to understand kids mouthing off in Spanish anyway.. Teachers are only in it for the money and the lifetime pension. Just like cops, firefighters and most politicians.

This is so obvious, but the "compassionate" crowd can't wait to get the least little reference to human decency out of the public schools for fear of hurting some deviant's self-esteem.

I teach in LAUSD, and I can tell you there is a reason for this. Those little boys have a bad case of "Baby Boy." Their mothers are their fiercest champions, and if their boy was rude to you, as one teacher was told, "Maybe he didn't like your tone."

Oddly enough, the girls are usually fine. In fact, often they're top the class. African-American women don't coddle their daughters. But the sons, the sons... oh, that's different. They talk a good game on the phone when you call them, but the kid's behavior doesn't change.

Oh, for the love of Pete: STFU.

Actually, that quote was what led me to post this thread in the first place. The absurdity of the idea that some races, for what ever reason, don't deal well with authority -so we need to protect that behavior in the name of cultural diversity (even if it means doing these kids a disservice later in life) could only come from a liberal mind. I generally dismiss the idea that anything is more important than the three R's, but school is also where kids learn some of the social skills they will need to become productive members of society when they grow up. A kid who never learns to respect authority is going to have a hell of a time finding and keeping a job. Any job.

With LA’s reputation for public school excellence, what district in the country wouldn’t want to adopt this policy as well?
