DETROIT - Federal investigators busted a Detroit business for paying workers not with cash, but with crack cocaine.
It started as a counterfeiting case, but investigators say they found much more at the Big C Tire Shop on Detroit’s east side.
It sounded good at first, a local Detroit business hiring workers. But the catch, they don't pay you with cash; they pay you with illegal drugs.
According to federal documents, if you cut the grass, you got a rock. Move tires, you get a rock.
Recruiting drug users as employees is beyond bad for the neighborhood.
"I used to stay out until 10 p.m. they didn't mind as long as you stay here in the area. But now, right now it's hard to raise a family," said neighbor Eric Taylor.
The investigation started with counterfeit Post Office paychecks. The feds says $100,000 in bogus checks were cashed.
Investigators found counterfeit equipment at Big C's and they also found out about the employee payment plan of crack instead of cash.
Neighbors hope the bust is the beginning of bringing back the neighborhood. Right across the street from Big C's is a senior center with over 100 senior citizens living there.
Residents say they're thrilled that this shop is no longer employing people who are addicted to crack cocaine and believe this neighborhood will start to get much safer.
Federal investigators say the evidence was better in the counterfeit check case, so they're not going to charge the owner with drug charges.
The federal counterfeit charges carry a stiffer penalty.

I remember character Nino Brown (Snipes) did the same with his crack manufacturing plant in movie New Jack City.(I love that movie)
He hired addicts and paid them in rocks of crack, but they had to be watched very closely obviously.

If there’s any silver lining to this story, this beats the junkies muffing and robbing for crack money.
A silver lining might be that liberals wake up and realize that creating dependent people isn't quite the 'gift' they though it was...

Somehow - maybe because it’s the best Detroit can do, or maybe because it is, after all, a quasi-capitalistic work-for-pay scheme rather than thievery or welfare - I’m OK with this.
Heck, I think the Oval Office employs a similar arrangement.
My only issue with this is the destructive nature of the drug itself. Aside from that, this is an example of the black market system of barter that FReepers usually support.
The fact is, Detroit has a thriving black market.
Still, crack cocaine might make more sense as a currency than Bitcoins.
Nah, they didn’t hire any crackheads in that movie, because they didn’t want anyone stealing the product. Remember, they only hired Pookie after he cleaned up, and once they found out he had relapsed, they killed him.
I recall after work some of them would go down to ‘the enterprise’ (the get high hotel's lounge) and smoke their rocks that they were paid with(if thats what they wanted), except Pookie who was supposed to be clean.
Remember Pookie narrating explaining it‘..they call it the Enterprise, beam me up Scotty’ ?
At least thats how I recall it.
It could be that those were just customers but I thought they included employees after their shifts, after all, where would they get money for it?

I was thinkiing about the “present” of the nation and it occured to me that the bribes, pay-offs, targeting political opponents, etc and etc is the history of Detroit. We are truly nationalizing Detroit!
