Authorities in New Jersey are hunting an internet celebrity known as "Kai the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker" after a man was found dead on Monday.

Kai, whose real name is Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, has been charged with murder by police and is considered armed and dangerous.

On Tuesday McGillvary had written that he had been "drugged [and] raped" in a post on his Facebook page. "What would you do?," he asked his 2,500 followers.

An arrest warrant for McGillvary was issued on Thursday. Authorities in New Jersey said his whereabouts were "unknown" and offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Kind of a shock that someone known as a "hatchet-wielding hitchhiker" might actually turn out to be a hatchet-wielding hitchhiker.

“He’s got an axe!”
“And Bud Light....”

“Hey Buddy, why the axe?”
“Bottle opener.”

He was picked up and arrested at a bus station in Philly. He went on Facebook and claimed he was drugged and raped. If he can prove that, he may be able to plead temporary insanity.

We need hatchet control laws: registration, background checks, and mandatory safety classes.

NJ already has hatchet control laws.

If this Kai guy owned the hatchet and it was not in a hunting or fishing kit, and he did not possess on his person a legal hunting and/or fishing license, the hatchet was illegally carried and wielded.

2C:39-6. f. Nothing in subsections b., c. and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5
shall be construed to prevent... (2) A person carrying a firearm
or knife in the woods or fields or upon the waters of this State
for the purpose of hunting, target practice or fishing, provided
that the firearm or knife is legal and appropriate for hunting
or fishing purposes in this State and he has in his possession
a valid hunting license, or, with respect to fresh water fishing,
a valid fishing license;

Impressive—but what’s top prevent a crazy person from buying one at an hunting convention? Univesal hatchet registration is the only solution. Something has to be done!

/sarcasm alert for the hard of reading
