Journalists should stop rolling their eyes when people warn against tyranny.
By Rich Lowry
Rarely has the White House briefing room so resembled the main ballroom at a meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference.
After news broke of a sweeping Justice Department subpoena of the Associated Press telephone records, White House press secretary Jay Carney didnt so much have to deal with querulous reporters pressing him on all fronts. He had to deal with citizens bristling with anger over perceived encroachments on their rights by an overweening government.

What we know so far:
- - - Sarah Hall Ingram had been serving as commissioner of the office responsible for tax exempt organizations from 2009 to 2012, and has since left to serve as director of the IRS Affordable Care Act division. While still the commissioner of the Tax-Exempt and Government Entities Division, she was assigned to head the implementation of ObamaCare at the IRS in 2010 after the law was enacted. THERE IS A REVIEW OF THE EMPLOYEES RESUME AND RECENT WORK ACHIEVEMENTS BY ONE OR MORE SUPERIOR SUPERVISORS.

The Obama Administration’s actions against the Associated Press have greatly infuriated people all across the political spectrum in the news media. Many conservatives think reporters are monolithically liberal. That isn’t true, but using police agencies to spy on media is so far out of line and such an affront to liberal values that pretty much everybody in the media who talks about this is angry.
Remember that there’s been a lot of anger on the left that President Obama hasn’t done enough to promote his liberal principles. Liberals aren’t necessarily all that happy with Obama, either, though for very different reasons from us. The actions against the Associated Press are not going to be forgotten any time soon.
