An off-duty Costa Mesa police detective had been sending text messages after a night of drinking when he crashed into a concrete pillar, an accident that killed the veteran officer, according to authorities.
Det. Mike Delgadillo, 57, died after his 2000 Mazda crashed in an underpass beneath the 55 Freeway near Newport Boulevard and Bristol Street on March 5, according to the Orange County coroner's report.

His wife will get the checks, probably.
Not an appropriate comment, sir.
Officer Delgadillo responded to a call at Mi Casa at approximately 5 p.m. on May 7th. The restaurant had too much tequila on hand. Delgadillo heroically took 8 shots in the line of duty. The officer also had several beers during this time. As he was about to make his next round a double, he received word that he was needed at Skosh Monahan’s.
As officer Delgadillo sped to the scene of uncontrolled drinking, he planned his next move. Bystanders say as soon as he arrived, he had a drink in each hand. Like all of our heroic men in blue, he flirted with with the ladies and escorted the “*******” in the tie outside.
After giving the “*******” the beating he was asking for, Delgadillo left for his next destination. While driving down the 55 freeway, Delgadillo was distracted by something completely out of his control, and struck a divider in the highway.
Forensic investigators have been trying to recreate the accident. Aided by the FBI and NSA, they were able to determine that the last text he sent said, “Don’t forget the limes.”
He’s a detective in Southern California and drives a 13 year old car? Weird.
Stupid, but honest? (My heart goes out to his family.)
Can his union rep claim “disability”?
“My client was lame in the head.”
looks like it was lime in the head
Let me express the same consideration these assholes texting do - good riddance. Better him than he kill someone for his selfish and unsafe habit.
At least he didn’t drive into someone else.
If he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt he hit the trifecta!
Not an appropriate comment, sir.

Think he had a cookie before he died?
When I’m driving, I either drink OR text. NEVER both at the same time! And I’m a safe driver as I ALWAYS wear my seat belt.
(I rarely even use my phone while driving.)
Drinking, texting, and no seatbelt?
Evidently he wasn't too big on obeying the laws he enforced.
Costa Mesa Police Det. Michael Delgadillo, who died in a single-car collision last month, had a blood-alcohol content of 0.14 percent, according to the Orange County coroner, a small amount of pain killers was also found.
add likely sleep deprivation and alcohol on top of it , other medications possibly, not a good mix.. more than one decision contributed to this accident. sad,, he was my age..
Thanks for that, it doesn’t take much to get ya a slab side seat at the Forever Gone Bowl these days.
