Toomey is open to reviving background-check bill

WASHINGTON - Sen. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) hasn't given up on his bill to expand background checks for gun purchases, he said Thursday, signaling more willingness to return to the plan than he had publicly shown before.

"If we could find a way to bring some more folks on board, then of course it would be worth bringing it up again," Toomey said in an interview.

While he has largely returned his focus to the fiscal issues he has long been associated with, he said he still occasionally talked privately with fellow senators about the background-check bill that was defeated last month, and about potential changes that might win new support. But he has not heard of any opponents willing to switch their votes, he said, leaving the bill stuck short.

"I've had occasional conversations with my colleagues really ever since the vote," Toomey said. "There's nobody that I'm aware of that has indicated that they would change their vote."

I grew up in Western Pa, moved to Alaska 20 years back. Here in Alaska, even the Dems would never even think about supporting gun control; not only would they get booted from office, but none of their kids or grandkids would ever get elected over it.

Now it use to be that way in Pennsylvania as I remember it. I know they have more hunters & gun owners than the total population of the State of Alaska. In Pa, gun people own way more guns per capita than the typical Alaskan that has a few guns he hunts with all year long. What has happened to the place? It's not all Phila vote either.

Couldn't imagine calling back East home after living with all the freedom here in Alaska.

Amazing. He just won’t let go. Still boggles my mind... Toomey going for gun registration, Rubio pushing amnesty, and Paul Ryan embracing homo adoption... and these aren’t even the usual RINO idiots, but the guys that were supposed to be our “solid,” reliable conservatives. Things like this have made me so distrustful of the GOP, I can’t even put it in words.

” But he has not heard of any opponents willing to switch their votes, he said, leaving the bill stuck short.”

Actually, if he’s telling the truth, that is good news. I suspect that most of the NO votes understand that the only thing worse than being on the wrong side of a gun control vote is to try to go from the good side to the wrong side (i.e., flip-flop).

The libs had their shot at it, but simply wanted too much.

Apparently the Republican Party is still somewhat alive...Toomey seems determined to put the final stake in its heart.

Warnings are worthless if we don’t heed them.

“What sort of dirt have they found on Toomey?”

Probably none! We are just seeing who the “real” Pat Toomey is! Primary the bastard! PA doesn’t need to wait for 30 odd years to “figure out” that Toomey is a clone of Arlen Spitoon!

“We would be 100 percent better off with Santorum than Obama for sure.”

That is about the safest statement anyone here could make! My dog sitter would make a better president than the half breed Marxist!

I hope we can primary that a-hole(Toomey) OUT in 2016. I see Sestack is running again so it could be a win if we get all firearms owners to fire Toomey. What a liar. A month ago he said he was not spending any more time on it because it lost in the vote. Now I am hit every day on TV ads from the Philthydelphia area from Mayors against gun violence or something like that saying what a great guy Toomey is for standing up to the NRA.They are spending A LOT of money on these ads.

Toomey has crossed over to the other side in more ways than one.

Why is he willing to work with Obama and the rats? They need to continue kicking him while he’s going down

I’m sick of these people using the tea party and conservatives to get elected and then turn around and double cross us.

Senator Toomey, wake up! Background checks would have done nothing at all for those kids in Connecticut. Background checks would be okay, except for what they represent to law-abiding gun owners. For those of us who obey the law, we would comply. The others would not and background checks would have done nothing. That is the sole reason we are taking the stand we are.

The more you back this bill, the more we are turning against you, the people who put you in office. Hear that!

Toomey needs to learn the military lesson that you learn from defeat, you do not reinforce it. Subject indifferent, for him to continue on this tack means that he does not have a good disposition to be a senator.

How about a system in which we know they're not building a database because the information on prohibited buyers flows out from the goobers to the FFL's instead of the purchasers' ID's flowing in from the FFL's to the govt? Set up on computers at the FFL's that can be shown to be incapable of storing the names that have been checked?

Or a universal system where you answer some questions on your driver's license test and get an endorsement on it, the important point being that EVERYONE gets the check so it can't be used to track buyers?

They SAY all they want is the check and they SAY they don't want to do a database, and this is all it would take if they weren't lying, so where's the problem, Doit Toomey?

"Mister" Toomey.

Sounds much better than "Senator" Toomey, does it not?
