NRA tactics: Take no prisoners

As a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association with an “A+” rating for her voting record in the Tennessee House of Representatives, Debra Maggart never imagined that her political career would end this way.

Maggart, who chaired the Republican caucus, killed an NRA-backed bill that would have permitted Tennesseans to keep firearms in their parked vehicles wherever they went — work, school or the neighborhood bar.

Months later, Maggart was stunned to see NRA-sponsored ads on billboards in her district. Her face was next to a picture of President Obama. The ads proclaimed: “Sure, Rep. Debra Maggart Says She Supports Your Gun Rights. Of Course, He Says the Same Thing.”

Supporting gun control cost Maggert her seat. Opposing gun control will probably cost Ayotte her seat. It all depends on where the race is being run.

if you are pro-2a, you don’t vote against laws that make it easier for people to exercise their 2a rights. period.

the only way you would is if someow they tacked so ething on that made abortion free and easy, or something that was named sounding pro-gun but in reality was the exact opposite - like the affordable care act, or some other democrat bill.

Here in southeastern Indiana almost two decades ago our local judge,a real a**hole demanded metal detectors and all sorts of restrictions at the formerly open courthouse. The only thing that really seemed to have changed after a 150 years at the courthouse was the arrival of this arrogant punk.

I think the fact he was raised by a mother of Asian origin who clung to all her birth nation attitudes rather than adopt the principles of American life with her American husband.

So what the bleep is wrong with Tennessee that firearms can’t be locked in a non-moving vehicle anyway? Are the tar babies supposed to “pack” at all time? There must be some other nonsense involved here? Maybe you’re supposed to leave the engine running if you have a gun in the truck? In any case if they have a stupid, non-workable law they ought to be getting rid of it and the dumbass chick who got in the way.

Politicians need to be made to understand this one fundamental fact:

If you SAY you support our Constitutional, civil, and Basic Human Right to keep and bear arms, you damn well better VOTE that way too.

This is in not a game. People’s lives depend on it.

Good on the NRA for calling her out on it.

“They did this to send a message: ‘If you don’t do what we want, we will annihilate you.’ ”

Yeah? So FOAD.

You defeated a bill that everyone else wanted. Why?

You didn’t think there would be repercussions?

I’d ask how stupid you are but, the question answers itself.

The NRA’s tough tactics have a long history. In 1994, after President Bill Clinton pushed criminal background checks and a 10-year ban on assault-style weapons through Congress, the NRA organized a grass-roots uprising.

The midterm elections that year were a bloodbath for Democrats who opposed the NRA, and Republicans took control of the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years.

Yep. Felt like 1776 again and next year will feel the same.

More nonsense un-Constitutional bills regulating and coding fireams “can’t keep in car, can’t take to the donut shop.” This is complete waste of politician’s duties and infringing on natural rights that will have no effect on reality. All diktats will be ignored, carry everywhere knives included.

"Did she think her NRA membership card implied some sort of electoral insurance against accountability?"

Just remember about politicians and lifetime memberships to the NRA. All that may mean is that their campaign coffieurs doled out $1,000 for the lifetime membership. I wonder if she's ever cracked open an issue of the American Rifleman....

"But my question is, will the Democrat running against her be better? Of course not."

Did you read the article? They fielded a candidate against her in the primary.

Do you think so? New Hampshire is pretty good on gun rights.

My point is that the NRA went after a less than perfect Republican meanwhile they support some awful Democrats.....and that is not changed by what you say.

I never set any weight on “membership” in any group of any kind by a politician. Show me some leadership and then I might begin to believe it’s part of your core principles.

Yes, I do. New Hampshire is getting more and more blue, and people like Bloomberg will may Ayotte the poster child for their anti-gun campaigns. The Democrats are set to lose a number of seats in 2014 and they'll look at Ayotte's seat as one of their better chances to regain one in 2016.
