Andrea Rebello (r.), here with her twin Jessica in an Instagram photo, was killed by the friendly fire of a police officer during a shootout with home invader Dalton Smith.

The Hofstra University student killed during a home invasion robbery was the victim of friendly fire from a veteran cop who unleashed a barrage of bullets when the armed intruder pointed a gun at him, Nassau County police announced tonight.

Andrea Rebello was accidentally shot in the head while career criminal Dalton Smith had her in a headlock and used her as a human shield while trying to escape out the back door, Det. Lt. John Azzata said.

The unidentified cop fired eight rounds, seven of which struck and killed Smith, and one of which hit Rebello, he said.

How did this cop pass the background check? Maybe he bought his gun at one of those unregulated gun shows.

Am I missing something here? Why are Freepwra assuming the cop would purposefully hit the hostage and hit her first?

I agree. To have an already hardened criminal serve only 8 years for attempted armed robbery is inexcusable IMO.

Well if the student was a Chistian, Libertarian, Othodox Jew, Libertarian, Conservative, or Constitutionlist, the cop was just following government policy. If she wasn’t, the cop will get another shot at it next time.

The real question is why was the officer in a position of exposure to an armed suspect with a hostage thus creating two hostages? This all assumes of course that the story is accurate...

Actually in hostage situations the proper training of law enforcement is for the officer NOT place himself in a standoff situation where the perpetrator can easily shoot the officer which forces the officer to use deadly force which could have been avoided with proper procedures.

Hostage negotiations are not like on TV ‘Dirty Harry’ where the negotiator stands in view of the perpetrator.

The officer wrongly put himself and the hostage in a deadly position where the officer could not then retreat when the perpetrator pointed a gun at him resulting in the death of the hostage.

“Minutes later, two police officers arrived at the home and found Rebello’s twin sister Jessica running out of the front door and the male guest hiding behind a couch on the first floor, Azzata said.

One of the officers entered the home and encountered Smith holding onto Rebello in a headlock, coming down the stairs”

The lone officer should have backed up and waited for additional officers to have an experienced supervisor negotiate with the offender rather than corner the offender like a trapped rat where the offender had no where to go but confront the officer directly.

Now that’s just going too far!

Don’t you know that even acclaimed Investigative Journalist Carl Bernstein has stated that “We Have To Assume The President Isn’t Involved In Any Nefarious IRS Activities”??

And yet here you are piling it on intermentably!
