Archie Comics gets first gay kiss with openly gay character Kevin Keller

IT'S just a quick kiss, but it's a long step forward for Archie Comics' only openly gay character Kevin Keller.

The Riverdale teen finds his life turned upside down after locking lips with his boyfriend, Devon, in Pop Tate's diner, drawing the ire of at least one disapproving Riverdale mom.

The woman "gets very offended and kind of pitches a bit of a fit," said Dan Parent, who writes and draws the issue, Kevin Keller No. 10 that is released Aug. 7.

"Kevin is kind of used to that, but Veronica records the whole thing and of course uploads it to the Riverdale equivalent of YouTube and that starts a bit of a debate," said Parent.

For Archie Comics it's a bit of art imitating life. Parent said he wrote the story after efforts to remove a comic magazine showing Keller getting married drew at complaints.

Weren’t the Archie characters owned by some Christian publishing group at one time?

How and why did they insert a male character that self-admittedly liked food better than girls (Jughead)?

Well if there’s one pop culture artifact that kids today identify with it’s Archie comics.

Holding someone up to public humiliation and embarrassment is bullying. But some bullying is more equal than other bullying.

With regards to Orwell.

Apparently, it’s why the Archie comics are targeting that all-important 1% of the market.

One more thing I don’t have to buy. Archie comics, off the list.

It ain’t the kissing on the mouth that that is so disgusting, it is the butt licking and coprophagic acts that spread disease and are truly disgusting to any normal human.

Talk about desperately trying to be relevant. Give it up, Archie, you died in the 60’s.

“Talk about desperately trying to be relevant. Give it up, Archie, you died in the 60’s.”

There’s an old saying, ‘when in a lean year advertise like a fat cat’.

Sounds like a bid to capture the market, after a poor time selling.

Is it for girls? I mean I just can’t imagine a boy’s favorite comic is Archie, full of the gay or not. “Archie would be so cool except for all this gay stuff, dude!”

Once in a very great while I see Archie comics on a magazine rack, usually in a grocery store, and I wonder to myself "who on earth still reads that?"

Archie Comics was something I used to read, while having an after school snack at the local Woolworth’s. (Yes, I used to buy Archie Comic and go to Woolworth and have a snack. Both of those memories gone!!

Didn't Archie comics feature a gay wedding issue as well? Is this Kevin Keller the same one who got married?

I could never figure just WHY Archie would feature a wedding at all. Gay or straight. These are high school characters.

Never any stories about Archie and Betty getting married.

Oops, didn't read the article. Kevin Keller DID get married.

Now that's realistic. Two 17-18 year old high school boys getting married.

That happens ALL the time.

The trick is getting everything back to normal afterwards.

Maybe it's more what uncles and aunts buy for their nephews and nieces.

I also wouldn't be surprised if, like Donald Duck, they did massive sales overseas.

Google the 1955 MAD Magazine sendup “Starchie”, where Starchie & Bottleneck bully the freshmen then do in their rival Wedgie van Smelt while the girls Salonica & Biddie are pimply faced drug users. Starchie bites down on chewing tobacco while Bottleneck spits in every other frame and then frames Starchie who gets sent to reform school for life.

Tame compared to nowadays.

I saw an Archie Comic in the checkout line at a store recently, and almost picked it up, just for the nostalgia and to see what happened to the “gang” since I was a kid. Glad I put it back now.
