President Obama believed that opposition to his healthcare reform law would fade after the 2010 election, according to former Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine).
Obama courted Snowe’s support in an attempt to make the bill bipartisan. He assured her GOP opposition to the law would be short-lived, she said.
“He thought the opposition to it would lessen after the [2010] election. I said, ‘It’s just the beginning.’ I said, ‘It’s going to grow because I can tell you it’s not going to go away and it’s going to get worse,’” Snowe said in a radio interview moderated by Julie Mason, host of SiriusXM’s Press Pool.
Snowe was invited to participate in the new series, “SiriusXM Leading Ladies.”
Obama locked his attention on the centrist Snowe to the exclusion of other members of the Senate Republican Conference.
He invited her to the White House for a lengthy one-on-one meeting and later followed up with a half-hour phone call, according to a New York Times report from December 2009.
Snowe ultimately spurned Obama’s entreaties. She voted for a version of the measure in the Senate Finance Committee but opposed it on the floor. The Maine senator told the president that public opinion would further sour “because of the implementation problems, which would just exacerbate and aggravate the opposition and those who were opposed to it to begin with.”
Snowe, who was one of three Republicans who backed the 2009 stimulus package, retired from the upper chamber at the beginning of this year.
She voted to bring it to the floor, she could have killed it in committee.

His use of czars instead of properly appointed and confirmed officials, the idea of working the IRS through union leaders and shop stewards instead of the official chain of command, his wholesale replacement of our O-8 and O-9 officers, his command of the Fed through family relationships - if he is not removed by the political organs, I would say that he understood us very, very well - perhaps better than you or I have understood us.

Once upon a time, Justice(?) Harry Blackmun thought that opposition to Roe v Wade would be short lived, petering out within 5 years after the decision. It obviously did not. Did Blackmun, likewise not understand America?

Obviously he did not. But more to your inference, Obama does not fundamentally understand America. Blackmun was a leftist who did not understand the deep moral code of many Americans. As a Liberal, as is quite common among liberals, Blackmun seemed certain he knew what was best for everyone else.

There’s been a lot of speculation that the current Supreme Court is going to try to figure out a way to avoid making a real decision on the Gay Marriage cases precisely because of the long term damage done by ramming Roe v Wade down the nation’s throat.
The belief is to allow the issue to develop through the states, rather than through Federal judicial edict.

Even the know-nothings are starting to realize that Obamacare has the potential to hurt them. But few will admit it out loud, hating to say “I was wrong”.

She needed to listen to Rush Limbaugh a little more, if she ever did at all.
Our entire Congress needs to stop skimming and actually read the bills they pass, including the immigration bill on the table right now.
