Pelosi ties bridge collapse to sequester (Hussein's idea)
CBS News ^ | 5/24/13 | Stephanie Condon

Posted on 05/25/2013 6:29:42 AM PDT by Libloather

The day after a four-lane interstate bridge in Washington state collapsed, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is using the incident to blame Republicans for the "dangerous consequences" of the sequestration spending cuts that started in March.

"For 62 days, the American people have waited for House Republicans to move forward with the budget process and replace the devastating sequester cuts that are slashing into our country's safety net, national security, and public infrastructure," Pelosi's office said in a press release. "Yesterday, an Interstate 5 bridge north of Seattle collapsed after an oversized truck hit the structure. Thankfully, no one was killed. But the collapse of the bridge--long-rated 'functionally obsolete'--highlights the dangerous consequences of our failure to repair and invest our roads and bridges."

That bridge was as sound as a bell right up until last March.

Course, the positive of this....being in sequestration, and 600,000 bridges held up last week. That’s pretty good statistics....if you ask me. If you only have two bridges a year to fall....that’s mighty fine numbers.

Hey Nancy!

We could give you a Trillion dollars for “infrastructure”, and these crumbling bridges would NOT be touched.

In the halls of vote buying politics, maintenance and repair never make the list of things to do.

Only shiny, new projects are deemed sufficient to attract vote buying notice.

Flashback: Obama Promised His Stimulus Would Fix Crumbling Roads and Bridges

May 24, 2013

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: We had a bridge collapse, which kind of surprised me because, you know, we spent almost a trillion dollars to repair the bridges in America, and I remember the president talking about it.

Let’s go back. November 22nd, 2008. This is after the election. This is his weekly YouTube address. He wasn’t president yet, but he was president-elect. And he’s talking about his stimulus plan. This is leading up to the stimulus, which he would put in place a few months later.

OBAMA: There will be a two-year nationwide effort to jump-start job creation in America and lay the foundation for a strong and growing economy. We’ll put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges.

RUSH: How’s that working out? Now, the reason I’m playing this is because they’re gonna try to blame Bush for this before the day’s over, if they’re not already. Well, they’ll find a way. Obama’s not gonna take responsibility for this. The stimulus was supposed to repair the roads and bridges. I know they blame Bush. That’s why I’m saying they’ll blame him for this one. They blamed Bush for the Minneapolis bridge collapse. So this is the day that Obama signed the stimulus. This February 17th, 2009, he was in Denver at the Museum of Nature and Science.

So what happened to the stimulus money that was supposed to be used for "infrastructure"?

The last I heard the sequester was Obama's idea and he signed off on it.

Who was President the last 4 1/2 years and why didn't they do something about America's crumbling bridges?

Finally, I think Nancy missed the connection between global climate change and the failure of this bridge.

All the republicans have to do is compile a list of things transportation money is siphoned off to pay for before we even get around to wasting money on bike paths, high speed rail, public transportation etc.

A few years back, Carl Levin was seeking millions out of the highway fund to save Tiger Stadium in Detroit. His justification was to be a bus stop out front.

Look, mushmouth (Coupe Deval Patrick) wants to “invest” over a billion dollars in high speed rail between New Bedford and Boston. The only ones who will benefit are the contractors and unions. And politicians, who will wallow in baksheesh.

Right now the MBTA (Boston transit system) runs annual deficits in the hundreds of millions. Privatize it and service will better and cheaper. But civil service unions will no longer be at the beck and call of the Democratic Party.

The people Mover in Detroit is 7% rider funded meaning the rest is paid by taxpayers in one form or another. From what I’ve read, 25% rider funding is considered successful for most public transportation systems.

We’re also paying for sensors in parking lots that work with phone apps that people use to find parking spaces. If I’m not mistaken, that started in San Fransisco before being expanded to other cities.

The city near me just scammed another hundred grand out of transportation money to repave a mile of bike trail through the hood that has proven to be nothing more than a hangout for hookers, pimps, crack heads, thieves and child molesters.

No, Nancy Pelosi! The Democrats throw money away maybe in the $ Trillions on foreign aid, to cronies who soon go bankrupt, to union thugs from GM, to support dubious and unproductive Federal agencies, and more waste, fraud, and abuse.

Nancy Pelosi herself could have paid for that bridge by skipping a couple of boondoggle trips for herself and her family.

And then she blames the Republicans? Just what is she talking about?!!

The only reason the democrats were so opposed to the new Detroit bridge was the fact that Canada is paying for it and they won’t have control of the money. (The AFP and tea partiers were opposed but quietly dropped their opposition as the facts came out)

Jon Stewart had a funny segement about it a couple years ago.

No stimulus funds were spent to replace that "obsolete" bridge that carried 70,000 vehicles a day. Stimulus funds were spent in this same area for a "bike" path, complete with automatic sensing solar powered lighting, that goes from a local indian casino back to the reservation.

“All the republicans have to do is compile a list of things transportation money is siphoned off to pay for before we even get around to wasting money on bike paths, high speed rail, public transportation etc.”

I agree with your comment and comments of other FRiends on this thread. Here’s an example that burns my biscuits (only 1 of many), because instead of taking me 1/2 hr to get home from work, it’s taking me up to 1-1/2 hours sitting in traffic, wasting gas and my time (note that there was already an area striped off for bike path on the west side of the road and I frequently saw people walking, walking their dogs or riding their bikes on it; and, that the road is supposed to have a detour going south until October - they started closing it off in Mar or Apr).

For those not familiar with the area, Bellevue is a suburb (across Lake Washington to the east) of Seattle. This area is along Lake Sammamish (a lake on the ‘Eastside’). Please also note, that, based on the below, it looks like this $8.3M is only the 1st part of 5 1-mile projects (when I’ve been through there - going north, it doesn’t seem like what they’re working on is 1-mile, I’ll have to clock it next time):

Background
The West Lake Sammamish Parkway Project will enhance safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers by providing a multi-use trail along the west side of the arterial, and it will restore the existing pavement while maintaining the distinct character of the area. The proposed construction plan breaks the roadway into five approximately mile-long segments.

The first segment of the project is located between Interstate 90 and Southeast 34th Street. The city began construction of Phase 1 in early 2013. The scope of work includes the construction of a 10-foot wide multi-use path on the west side of the street, a four-foot shoulder on the east side, and two general-purpose travel lanes (one northbound and one southbound).

Here’s what I could find for costs – looks like $8.3 million for this phase.

http://www.ci.bellevue.wa.us/projectsmap/PublicGridView.aspx?Criteria=ELH

There’s a drawing on the site. The below says Phase 1 - as mentioned above, it appears that this is the 1st of 5 1-mile projects. If this is the case, then the total cost will be over $40M - wonder what they could have done to re-inforce/fix that bridge with that money.

http://www.ci.bellevue.wa.us/west_lk_samm_prkwy.htm
