That was Gene Rayburn. And Match Game was an excellent game show.

Bummer. Gene Burns was, aside from Wattenburg, a breath of fresh air on an otherwise bolshevik station (KGO). RIP Gene.

Aww... first Lee Rogers, and now Gene Burns... who was that other guy from KGO who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge? Liberal news talk guy...

Yup and KGO fired him last year. He did not retire. Some of the crew ended up over on 910 and for a long time would say they were just sitting in for Gene.

He will be missed at least on the local foodie scene....not so much on politics

Lee was a treasure. I miss him daily. No one else like him in the morning. I miss Jim Eason as well.

I thought he was libertarian.

I too listened to him while he was here. He was sharp, though in my opinion never exhibited the intellect of a Brudnoy and certainly not Avi Nelson. I heard of his passing while listening to Avi this morning.

Odd that the guy to announce this on RKO turns out to be Avi Nelson this morning. As an aside, it seems as though Avi has been purged from his Saturday show. Whatever RKO’s strategy is, it is puzzling the hell out of me.

I'm betting that Burns won't be getting the same disrespectful treatment from his passing that Rodgers got in the Bay Area.

Got to meet Gene Burns about 10 years ago, while working at the local Art & Wine Festival. Gene liked to do his Saturday “Dining Around Town” shows live from the local Art, Wine and Food festivals in the Bay Area in late spring and early summer. The biggest challenge we faced was that Gene had mobility problems (a result of his strokes, perhaps) so we had to find an area in our park that was easy to access but not in the middle of traffic.

What I do recall about setting him up was that he was quite nice about it and, in spite of everything, not overly demanding. Wish I could say the same about a number of other celebrities I’ve met and worked with over the years...

RIP, Gene. We’ll tip a glass of wine in Walnut Creek next weekend in your memory!

He had his days when he was brilliant, but overall his show was very uneven. I could not stand it when he kept callers on way too long.

The sodomy wouldn’t surprise me with Gene, as it really didn’t surprise me with Brudnoy, although I think Brudnoy was more intellectually honest. I think the brightest of the crew is (and remains) Avi Nelson. It’s a pleasure to occasionally hear him on air.

Most people knew Brudnoy was gay....Gene not so much. Avi is a smart guy. Shame he lost that senate race to Kerry way back in the day. Avi should have relocated to NH when NH was more conservative right after the Kerry loss cause I suspect he could have had a US senate seat up there.

Agree on Avi. I guess the sodomite thing was lost on me as regards Brudnoy, though I grew up listening to him. As regards Avi, yes I think New Hampshire residency plus some military service would have cinched things for him. He remains the best educated person (in terms of being educated in tough, tangible disciplines) on air.
