Accidental outlaw Willie Nelson celebrates 80th birthday
AP ^ | May 20 2013 | Chris Talbott

America loves its outlaws, and few are as admired and lionized as Willie Nelson.

As the enduring American icon recently turned 80, he's been honored with lifetime achievement awards, serenaded at special performances and saluted by musicians from every genre of music. And Nelson has taken it all in with a bemused smile.

"It's a nice thing to do for someone on their birthday, and I appreciate it," Nelson said in a recent interview aboard his bus. "Usually I like to forget my birthdays as much as possible."

Willie went from folk to fried in the span of 20 years. A lot of people did in the ‘60’s but most of them weren't lionized like this friend of the left. Willie can take his fame/money/opinions and stick them where blue skies are never seen. Dozens of country singers far more deserving are never going to be honored like this piece of counter-culture detritus.

Don’t let your children grow up to be liberals -— or potheads.

But I still have to cut Willie some slack. Nobody sings like Willie.

Happy Birthday, Willie Nelson!

Willie Nelson - Always On My Mind

what’s interesting is that he has always looked old and haggard. So at 80 he knows like he did 30 years ago. he never changes

Just like the other one
You've been holding on to it
And I sure will like a hit

Willie is great.

He has consistently delivered great pleasure in my direction for forty years.

It is, it’s part of the hankering for freedom.

There’s another way of doing it, it’s being a willing slave to the Lord. (Which does NOT mean being a slave to committees of clergy....) This cuts square across any human law that dares get in the way.

I see him around from time to time........in the Austin area.

He has a little eating joint out on hwy 71 W called Poodies. We go there once in a while—good burger joint—usually has live music of some sort on the weekends, and once in a while, Willie stops in and sings a set or two.

The first time I saw him, I was surprised at how little he is-—

Willie with Dave Mustaine of Megadeth. Mustaine was in Texas looking for a ranch and ran into Willie at a restaurant. Apparently they're going to work on a project together when Mustaine finishes the tour he just started.

Mustaine is the more conservative of the two.

Dave Mustaine is a flawed but genuine Christian. If you want to hear some great Conservative Metal listen to United Obamanation, an anti UN CD by Megadeth.

Mustaine refuses to play with openly satanic or antisemitic bands and even had one called "Rotting Christ" thrown off the ticket with him in Israel. He's clear about his belief that marriage is between a man and a woman, wants to build a wall on the border, says Obama is the most divisive president we've ever, and yes, hates the UN with a passion.

Last winter he posted this on twitter which shows how he feels about education in America.

< The outlaw is a big thing in country and western music. >

Waylon was the first Outlaw, although it was not by design. When the reporter called him an “outlaw” in an article (Rolling Stone?), he was smart enough to ride with it. And the NY feds gave him free publicity with that cocaine-that-wasnt-there drug bust in his Nashville studio, so he and Willie would have been crazy to fight it! This whole Outlaw thing is one of the most interesting pieces of Americana history that I’ve ever read.

You’re absolutely correct. People should take a listen to Willie’s album Yesterday’s Wine to understand this concept. While I mainly listen to and play extreme metal, That album is one of the best albums I have ever listened to, and touches me deeply when it comes up on my iPod.

Well, I like a lot of Willie's songs too, such as this classic song sung by Patsy Cline:

   Crazy ~~ Patsy Cline

However, I don't like this next Willie Nelson song.    I think he should always follow this next one with his "Crazy" song, cause I think he wrote this "cowboy" song after he smoked some Texas locoweed:    Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other ~~ Willie Nelson

Lyrics to the most brilliant song in the whole wide world. (Long live Waylon. :-)

I’m for law and order, the way that it should be.
This song’s about the night they spent protecting you from me.
Someone called us outlaws in some ol’ magazine
New York sent a posse down like I ain’t never seen.

CHORUS:
Don’t you think this outlaw bit has done got out of hand?
What started out to be a joke, the law don’t understand.
Was it singing through my nose that got me busted by the man?
Maybe this here outlaw bit has done got out of hand.

We were wrapped up in our music, that’s why we never saw,
The cars pull up, the boys get out and the room fill up with law.
They came bounding through the back door in the middle of the song.
They got me for possession of something that was gone, long gone.

CHORUS

Oh, please. It was just a bloody joke. Where’s your sense of humor.

I love C & W, and my house is filled with bluegrass music, which is a lot closer to its Scottish roots.

Have Chris Kristopherson stand next to him ... Willie looks bigger.

When Waylon Jennings or Johnny Cash stood next to them they looked like Giants (Still the best Concert I have ever attended, those 4 were MAGIC together)

With Willy’s popularity, any new song he may write will be a hit...Willy could have written and sang far more songs than he has and it seems like we’ve been cheated out of what could have been...

It also seems Willy is content to make some money but not all of it, while driving around the country partying...Nothing wrong with that I s’pose...

Guess he’s got a place on Maui...Since he’s never there, he’d probably never notice if I bunked in once in a while...

Scotch-Irish to be exact. Here is Patsy Cline with a classic written by Willie Nelson in 1962:

All people differ in many ways. I can't stand in judgement of them. You are entitled to your opinion and it's very telling.

What Willie did for Johnny Bush really impressed me. A pure unselfish act of a caring human being...which was also very telling.

.......Willie has worked tirelessly for FarmAid and other charities donating millions to thousands of farmers and others!

I don’t know of any other person, singer or otherwise, who has the track record Willie has for raising money by donating proceeds of selected concerts to charity. The last one I went to was just a few weeks ago in Austin and he donated that money to charity.
