Robert Dole’s Two Cents
New York Sun ^ | May 28, 2013 | Masthead Editorial

The Democrats are in a swoon over the fact that Senator Dole is complaining about the Republicans. The former Republican leader in the upper house told Christopher Wallace of Fox News that the GOP “ought to put a sign on the national committee doors that says ‘closed for repairs.’” He reckons the GOP lacks for “ideas and positive agendas.” Mr. Wallace asked Mr. Dole whether he could make it in today’s Republican Party “I doubt it,” Mr. Dole said dolefully. “Reagan couldn’t have made it. Certainly Nixon couldn’t have made it, cause he had ideas. We might have made it, but I doubt it.”

Mr. Dole mightn’t want to get too far up on his high horse. Oh, we understand, he was a war hero who twice rose to the Republican national ticket — once, in 1976, as the vice president candidate running with President Ford. The two of...

The jibe that Republican Party today lacks for ideas we don’t buy. The most important idea today is constitutional conservatism. We have remarked on this before. It is different than either paleo- or neo- or libertarian- or Christian-conservatism, to number the varieties that have given good service in recent decades. It looks on the principles that animated the American founding and were enshrined in the parchment that is the supreme law of the land. It welcomes all races, classes, and creeds (or those who hold no religious creed), so long as they are prepared to pursue a close reading of the Constitution. It’s a glorious idea that leads to a strong foreign policy, limited government, and sound money. It protects rights not by grants from the government but by restricting the power of the government. If these ideas triumph it will be because of the rising generation of the GOP.

There are plenty of good, positive ideas being brought up. The GOP-E, of which Dole is a member, is suppressing them.

Dole was the “tax collector for the welfare state.”

I don't recall who gave him that moniker but it fits.

"Mr. Wallace asked Mr. Dole whether he could make it in today’s Republican Party “I doubt it,” Mr. Dole said dolefully. “Reagan couldn’t have made it."

Nonsense. While I agree that a RINO like Dole couldn't make it, Reagan would be a darling of the Tea Party crowd - Just like he was back in 1980 with the equivilent Republican base. The silk stocking Republicans were saying the same thing about Reagan back in '80 that Dole is saying about the Republican party now.

I like Bob Dole but he is out in left field again. Bob spent his life in the minority until the “bomb throwers” like Newt captured Congress from the lefties. This isn’t debatable. It’s fact.

“Mr. Wallace asked Mr. Dole whether he could make it in today’s Republican Party”

He did not make it in his party either. He needs to be reminded he lost the election so ...

“I don’t recall who gave him that moniker but it fits.”

The man who gave Dole that nickname was none other than Newt Gingrich! And Dole hated him for it. And Dole was responsible for the republicans caving to Clinton in the ‘95 shutdown. For moderate repulicans always cave to democrats.

Yes he did. Stupid ideas but they were ideas.

Ideas like wage and price controls, the EPA, dumping the gold standard, the War on Drugs.

I could go on but I want to leave some fun for the rest of you.

I heard a clip yesterday, it was painful listening. He sounded 200 years old. Thankful for his service in WWII, but not as a senator.

Thing is, here are the FACTS:

1) Bob Dole was nominated by Republicans in an era (1996 - not that long ago!) that likewise sought a Reagan-esque candidate. (Because of the GOP-e we settled on Dole and got behind him although we all knew he was a RINO.)

2) Using the standard RINO GOP-e trick, Bob Dole, the RINO, picked Jack Kemp, the arch-Conservative, as his running mate.

3) Bob Dole was REJECTED by American voters, not the Republicans who nominated him.

4) Bob Dole played footsie with Bill Clinton in the election, and like McCain who followed him, attacked Republican primary rivals much harder and vigorously than he went after Clinton. It was almost a love-fest between Dole and Clinton during the campaign.

5) Clinton himself is on record as saying after the election that he felt fortunate he drew such a weak opponent as Dole.

Viagra did it to him.

He has been duly warned to seek medical help for erections lasting more than four hours, but he is not listening.

We all say dumb things when we get very old. Leave the old guy alone, and stop quoting him on anything important.
