That was conventional wisdom after the May 20th tornado. Get out of town rather than weathering the storm. Too bad that doesn’t work when everyone else is trying to evacuate at the same time. Lesson learned for me. I’ll stay home. People need to stay off the roads during these things.

Should have used a Ford.

Seriously, that vehicle’s pretty banged up. I hope injuries weren’t too serious.

It wasn’t rush hour. It was 6:30 PM, and the news was warning people it was going to be bad all day long.

6:30 is still” rush hour” in my area, and they have been warning of threatening weather all week.

What are people supposed to do? Quit their jobs and hide at home?
Hell that’s no safer than any place else.

I’m just saying the government should simply put out warnings and then get out of the way and not clog traffic “ for everyone’s safety”

I think people are still learning from these. This, frankly, is the worst I’ve seen it in OKC. Both the May 3 1999 and May 20 2013 missed us by about 2 miles. Today it looks like we had a much nearer miss (stockade fence with metal poles bent over, roof damage, trees down, etc in our neighborhood).

I think after May 20 people decided it was better to simply leave than weather these storms. I have never seen traffic so busy at this time of the night in my area. That makes me think people were trying to get out, but you can’t leave when the roads are clogged. Had several yahoos burn past me on the highway at very high rates of speed, apparently in a mad dash to escape or make it home in time.

The best bet? Get a storm shelter and ride the storms out. Even a direct hit by an F-5 cannot destroy an underground shelter (but you might have to be dug out after). That’s far, far better than being caught on the roads as some people were.

The weather reporting is very, very good, BTW, so it’s possible to know when it’s still safe to travel and when it’s not. I’d say it’s too late if you’re within a 30 minute window. On something like this that covered a large area with tornadoes all over, it’s foolish to try and escape. A family member tried it and ended up having a much nearer miss than if they had stayed home.

I am still watching the local St Louis stations. They are saying that our area South of St Louis needs to be monitored in case of developments.

It looks like St. Louis Metro area is cleared for now, still waiting to hear the results. Tornado did hit there. Just heard that Gov. Nixon has declared a state of emergency.

Holiday Inn Express was hit. The hospitals were spared.

Thank God you were missed, I can’t imagine.
We get hurricanes ( with tornados) but at least can see them coming.

Our State learned finally to get out of the way, ( for the most part) close the toll booths to let traffic flow for the folks in the costal areas, and move accidents well off to the side.

Everyone is praying for your community, I dread seeing the news in the morning.

Sadly i suspect those that were being stupid on the roads tonight are the same people that come up on merge to the right lane, get in the left lane and go like hell then try to butt in at the last minute causing traffic to come to a complete hault. Stupid people do stupid stuff. More so when under extreme stress putting everyone around them in danger.

Very happy you are safe.
