IRS Sought to Impose Gift Tax on Freedom Watch Donations
Townhall.com ^ | June 1, 2013 | Carol Platt Liebau

Posted on 06/02/2013 3:46:32 AM PDT by Kaslin

As this post from yesterday pointed out, it's hardly news to those who read the IRS IG report that Americans were targeted by the IRS -- not just based on membership in the "Tea Party" or "9/12" -- but based on their political sympathies generally.

Last night, the Wall Street Journal reported on another example of this phenomenon.

Apparently, an IRS probe of Freedom Watch began in (surprise!) the unit headed by Lois Lerner (still enjoying a full-pay and full-benefits vacation, courtesy of the taxpayers she harassed).  According to the WSJ:

In February 2010, the same month the tea-party targeting started, according to a recent inspector general's report, Freedom's Watch was subjected to an IRS audit that focused largely on its political activities, an uncommon but not unprecedented action, election lawyers say. The probe broadened into other areas, including executive compensation.

About a year later, as many as five donors to Freedom's Watch were subjected to IRS audits of their contributions that sought to impose gift taxes on their donations to the group, according to lawyers and former officials of Freedom's Watch.

Tax experts say that effort was highly unusual. The IRS generally hadn't sought to impose the gift tax on donations to tax-exempt groups such as Freedom's Watch in at least 20 years, perhaps longer, following an unfavorable court ruling and changes in the law by Congress, according to lawyers and IRS documents.

And again, you have to wonder: Why does Lois Lerner still have a job?

The IRS stole the 2012 election for Obama and the democrats/socialists in the Senate.Obama ordered his IRS to rig the election shut down tea party groups and donors to Republicans .And that's exactly what the IRS did . This big eared socialist would not be now signing UN arms treaties that take away our 2nd amendment right if it had not gotten the IRS, FBI , DHS, DOJ , dept of labor etc to rig the election. We no longer live in a free country. We don't have free nor valid elections in the USA anymore. the MSM pulled a coup in 2008. We now live in Venezuela. And we know what we have to do get our freedom back

How can we have a campaign in 2014? The IRS shut down conservative groups for 2012. what's to stop these arrogant democrats from doing it again.

Instead of "bttt," or "bump," methinks "Valerie Jarrett" would be more appropriate for these threads.

A thought just occurred to me, I think it is a very good thing that Conservatives and Republicans really don’t act like the Liberals/progressive/MSM like to portray us. Because if we did... Well I’ll leave that up to your imagination now.

To me the chilling effect is that the individual donors were subject to scrutiny.

As just an aside, we received a notice from the IRS in March of this year questioning the tax treatment of an item for the year 2011. We have been treating it the same way, at the advice of our tax lawyer, for seven years. I’m convinced it was a result of my political contributions during the 2012 election cycle.

Hint: the same people that haven’t arrested Lerner also haven’t arrested Obama, Eric Holder and on and on we could go. Does that tell you anything? Under the current setup, there’s nobody to issue an arrest warrant. That comes from the top of the judicial system, not from the cop on the beat.

I hope you don’t waste time and angst on wondering why a federal prosecutor who works for Obama and Holder hasn’t had them arrested.

People aren’t arrested unless or until the judicial system believes there is a criminal case to be made against them with evidence, witnesses, etc, and until that judicial system WANTS them arrested.

The GOP should not stop with the current investigation. The IRS and Obama corruptocrats stole the election by suppressing the conservative vote, while making sure that 110% of the Black vote in many districts in swing states turned out. Someone needs to start investigating voter returns in Ohio and Florida for starters, and someone should be tried for voter fraud.

What I find amazing is that no one who had knowledge of what was going at the IRS, the IG investigation or the targeting of conservatives during the last election cycle leaked info to the GOP.

Makes me think the GOP was happy to let the IRS take the Tea Party apart. How many of the GOP’s establishment groups got this special treatment?

funny you blame the GOP for what democrat Obama did

Obama got his IRS to audit Romney donors and individual donors to the GOP too , as well as the “tea party” groups. Here's a link that shows IRS targeted Romney and other GOP donors:

You work for evil, hard core communist liberal scum ,namely democrats. You seek to destroy all remaining opposition to these democrat vermin. Democrats seek to take EVERY thing you have every piece of property, every right. do you have any sense of independence and sense in the belief of a free people to determine their own destiny in the free market. democrats want to destroy everything that is good , every human principle like individual rights , liberty , right to OWN property, middle America, small town America, America, right worship , Christianity every-one of these good things Democrats hate and want to destroy.
Government is evil . government doesn't work. These democrats ALL of them every single one voted for IRS thugs to control our healthcare, voted for 2700 pages of government tyranny called Obamacare. not a single Republican voted for OBamacare but you say they are the same . surely you just want to suppress any support for any thing that is not a democrat’
If Republicans were the same as democrats and the evil that you say and not democrats then why when they Republicans had control of Congress did they stop Hillary care, Bush's Amnesty ,carbon taxes, gun control and all the evil gov democrats want to pass?

Dead on.

I think the Establishment Republican Party fears and hates the Tea Party types with a loathing that knows no bounds. Something they don't feel for the Liberal Democrats.

Their fear and hate is well founded, as we represent a far, far, greater threat to them than do even the most Liberal Democrat

In the end, it all points to the following people: President Barack Obama, White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, former White House Senior Advisor David Axelrod, and former Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner. It’s somewhere in this group that the plan to use the IRS to harass political opponents starting February 2010 was proposed and implemented.

GOP other than Cruz is not lifting a finger in the House to abolish the IRS .

They have voted to fund Obamacare.

GOP doesn't care if they are the conductors on the gravy train or merely along for the ride.

We do not have a party that speaks for taxpayers, only two factions in DC that have elections to determine who controls the spoils.

There will be no solutions coming from the political class in DC.

The nation is too large and to divided to continue to be governed by an elite political class in DC that extorts 4 trillion dollars a year from those outside the beltway, skims off the top for themselves and their friends, and then deficit spends even more in exchange for votes to keep itself and the Federal apparatchiks living in fat city.

They can only continue this tyranny through the use and threat of violent force and intimidation.

The free states must refuse to participate in the monstrosity on the Potomac by refusing to send or vote for representatives to Congress, by not sending income taxes to the IRS, and by forming alliances with other states of like mind.

The Governors have National Guard at their disposal and must be ready to use them for defense if the Washingtonians invade their territory.

The greatest threat to the freedom and liberty of the US Citizen is the Federal Apparatus in DC, not a bunch of ragheads in the middle east.

No they get a tax deduction. Furthermore, a lot of family "charities" (not Gates and Buffet) are actually inheritance tax evasion manuveurs.

You set up a charity, make contributions and get a tax deduction, and you kids are on the board of directors. The kids get expense accounts and small salaries which eat up about 80-90 percent of the contributions and maybe 10-15 percent are actually donated to do something charitable. The kids do have to pay taxes on their salaries but not the expense accounts.

Time to investigate every department Lois ever worked for. FEC where she targeted Christians and conservative politicians is a good start.

Obama’s 2008 campaign donations had numerous red flags. It was said Soros and Obama had prepaid money cards so they could sneak in any amounts they wanted to his campaign.

Now World Bank whistleblower says Obama won with foreign donations.

FEC needs to be scrutinized big time.

Nice map. Just a small typo for North CA.

If the new George Washington could just 'invade' the strategic states of MI and WI, and connect to the Alberta and ND gas/oil fields by occupying MT, the rest of the commie states would capitulate very quickly.

There's only one to settle this:

• Everyone @ the Tax Exempt Division Resigns;
• Appoint Tea Party Representatives to the Tax Exempt Division of the IRS to serve for 2yrs;
• Provide full immunity & no oversight for the term of their service.

That should make us even-steven...

The truth sucks. They are a bunch of noise so you believe they are an opposition party. One wing of the single political party in the US, the party of Ivy League Incumbent Lawyers. I don’t care which side is killed off first, vote 3rd party.
