Posted on 06/02/2013 11:32:00 AM PDT by servo1969
Watching the celebration at the NRA convention over the defeat of background checks was the most nauseating experience of the day.
I am not a New York gun control liberal, either. I support a shotgun for home defense, a handgun for limited conceal/carry, and an assortment of hunting rifles to balance West Virginia's exploding deer population (as evidenced by hourly collisions with cars). So, I am hardly out of the mainstream.
But, the gun safety debate is B.S. This foaming at the mouth, Obamar is coming for the guns, Nanny Bloomberg is a bad billionaire, and most despicable of all, those survivors and victims are pawns in the liberal agenda is knuckle-dragging Cretan talk.
And no matter how many times Sen. Joe Manchin tries to explain his compromise (a decent attempt thwarted by extremists), the hard right lies and foams. The repeated lies now seem like the truth, what with the likes of Sen. Kelly Ayotte telling them.
Probably the most serious miscalculation opponents make is the guest list for the NRA speaker's podium. To let the half-wit half-term quitter Sarah Palin have a microphone is to alienate the very people Republicans need to work with on future legislation. To say nothing of the other speakers.
And how does choosing a white, rich old man with an offensive degrading speech about the war of "Northern Aggression" as NRA president forward a sense of reasonableness? History lesson: It was an awful Civil War won decisively some 150 years ago. Over slavery. The Confederacy wanted to keep African-Americans in chains and President Lincoln didn't.
Sure, there were states' rights issues, but nullification, secession, and treason were settled at Appomattox Courthouse. Sure, Reconstruction left a bad taste. But, resurrecting these same things, the way South Carolina is as we speak, is to invite a return to the whole concept of a Union.
Here it is. The NRA advocates armed rebellion against the duly elected government of the United States of America. That's treason, and it's worthy of the firing squad. The B.S. needs a serious gut check. We are not a tin pot banana republic where machine gun toting rebel groups storm the palace and depose the dictator.
We put the president in the White House. To support the new NRA president's agenda of arming the populace for confrontation with the government is bloody treason. And many invite it gladly as if the African-American president we voted for is somehow infringing on their Constitutional rights.
Normally, I am a peaceable man, but in this case, I am willing to answer the call to defend the country. From them.
To turn the song lyric they so love to quote back on them, "We'll put a boot in your ---, it's the American way."
Except it won't be a boot. It'll be an M1A Abrams tank, supported by an F22 Raptor squadron with Hellfire missiles. Try treason on for size. See how that suits. And their assault arsenal and RPGs won't do them any good.
So, to return to reality, all of us. Let's make common sense gun safety a deciding issue for 2014 and beyond. The NRA certainly has. Let's push back. We the People. The 85 percent who support more robust background checks. And when the next domestic terrorist with an assault rifle comes along, we can blame the leaders and fringe of the NRA for arming them.
And there you have it.
He’s a loser and the readers who left comments ripped him to shreds.
Has the article gone down the memory hole yet?
Of course he’s a NY liberal - he started his essay with a lie.
Okay, I’ll be the nice guy and send him one of those old airline barf bags since he was nauseated by folks celebrating the govt no being able to infringe further on our rights. What a didiot.
LOL! He thinks Sarah Palin is a "half-wit". What does that make someone like him, who obviously was behind the door when they were teaching American history?
Half right. The CSA did indeed secede over what they saw as a threat to their property.
But during the first two years of the war Lincoln would have been happy to end the war with slavery generally intact.
It’s very interesting to listen to people who say we don’t need guns while they demonstrate exactly why we do.
The next gun law I want to see implemented, is the one that requires homes with no guns inside to have a moderate sized sign on the front lawn that heralds that fact.
In fact, I welcome every gun control advocate to please put a sign on their front lawn damning anyone that owns a gun.
Put your money where your mouth is Lefties!
The NRA does not advocate armed rebellion, AFAIK. They advocate being ready to engage in armed rebellion if and when it becomes necessary.
I quite agree we're nowhere near that point. Yet.
But I assume Mr. Swindell would agree that armed rebellion is sometimes necessary. We would just differ on where that point is.
I support a shotgun for home defense, a handgun for limited conceal/carry
Well: Aint that damned nice of you.
You are practically a Conservative aren’t you. Azzhole.
I feel the same way you do about people who try to take my 2nd Amendment rights Let’s shoot them. I am ready to defend the country against azzholes and idiots like you.
Give the anti gun nuts an inche they will want a mile.
Just like the Boy scouts gave an inch and they will soon be out of business.
If my child were a student of his, I’d be demanding a tuition refund. I don’t demand that a journalism professor not be goofy, however nice that might be; but, I do expect that he be able to do something that resembles research. I’ve seen tweets that were better researched than this.
Assassination is a two way street...best not go there.
People in Germany said the same thing about opposing Hitler. Same thing in Cuba about opposing Fidel.
Defending the Constitution against enemies domestic is not treason.
“I am willing to answer the call to defend the country. From them.”
Likewise, I am willing to answer the call to defend the people... from bootlickers like you.
“and an assortment of hunting rifles to balance West Virginia’s exploding deer population”
And once again Professor Idiot, the 2nd Amendment isn’t about hunting.
Here’s some reviews from Ratemyprofessor.
All of these were posted BEFORE this article was published.
8/28/06 - He’s ADHD and sprays when he talks so sit 5-10 feet out of range. He is good with names and faces and has a quick tongue so don’t try to piss him off.
11/1/06 - He’s quick-witted, all over the place, likes to summarize his lecture before he lectures, while he lectures, and after his lecture. Very thorough, but allows us to know too much about his planning for course content. Mostly, he’s great though.
1/2/07 - Despite being a communist, Chris is an awesome professor. His ability to outline what you need to take away from his course and his willingness to understand your point of view as a student is refreshing and impressive. If you have a chance to take him as a professor take it!
2/7/07 - Excellent professor! Very clear about requirements for his classes. Presents material effectively. Genuinely cares about students. Very intelligent and hilarious! You’ll hear a lot about his political views, but he makes class interesting. Great all-around guy!
9/5/07 - Dr. Swindell is cool. He is kinda crazy and a communist but whatever. He likes to make jokes and doesn’t care if you crack jokes too. I made jokes at his expense and he complemented my wit. If you can get in his class, GET IN!
11/23/10 - Pretty full of himself and thinks his material is more demanding than what it is. He genuinely cares about his students though. Look for the lesson in between the bouts of political ranting.
1/14/13 - He’s an excellent professor. He isn’t always totally clear and has his days where it seems he’s gone off the deep end, but he really does care and will do anything in his power to help you.
Journolism... with a side order of F-G COMMUNISM!
Isn’t that delightful?
Brave talk from a liberal who would starve to death if the bridges weren’t there to bring the trucks with food to his city, and the utilities were cut off denying him power and water to his house. There are effective methods that can be used to show a populace the error of their ways, some of which use guns very sparingly.
Actually that is a really good idea, keeping what he thinks of as common sense gun issues front and center. If we can do that then the Democrats will become a party of California and the Northeast with dwindling low and dwindling representation in the Congress. Even people who are uncomfortable around guns are beginning to ask why they are so all fired determined to go after the guns.
Yeah, and I’m a vegetarian because I eat lettuce on my hamburger.
That idiot is getting hammered in the responses at the link. Good to see him being called out on his BS.
I found it interesting to learn that the majority of Southern soldiers were not slave holders. They were fighting a War against Northern Aggression and perhaps also were used somewhat as pawns by the wealthy slave owners who feared that loosing their slave-property would end their livelihood and way of life. Much more to it then meets the eye or is taught in classrooms.
Marshall University, where he teaches, has a notoriously strict and unconstitutional speech code.
So they don’t just hate the second amendment. They also hate the first amendment.
The debate over the arming of citizens is this: An armed person is a free person. The Current Regime is very much afraid of the peasants showing up at the gates armed not with pitchforks and torches, but AR-15’s with fully filled 30-round magazines and ACP-380’s with fully filled 10-round magazines.
The reason for the Second Amendment (which few other nations on earth have as part of their organizational documents) is to correct the situation when the change of administrations does NOT go smoothly, resulting in a tyrannical regime gaining access to the levers of government, and acting on the wishes and at the direction of a minority opinion.
Every able-bodied male citizen is part of the militia. Consider the situation as it exists in Switzerland. With one of the greatest of mass warfare encounters ever in history swirling about them, they remained adamantly neutral in the Second World War. It is also exceedingly difficult to attain full Swiss citizenship, if not a direct male descendent of Swiss origin.
Not that simple. Northern Aggression, if you wish to call it that, was caused by secession and attacks on US facilities.
Secession was caused, by the seceding states’ own proclamations, primarily by a desire to protect the institution of slavery. Which desire was not surprising, since slaves constituted the majority of the capital in the South. We might get a little testy ourselves at a threat to over 50% of our invested wealth. We got all upset about the recent recession, which knocked off something like 5% or 10%.
The 1860 per capita wealth in the South was $3,978; in the North it was $2,040. Most of that additional southern wealth was in slaves.
“Most southerners didn’t own slaves” is accurate, but not nearly as simple as it sounds.
In the Lower South (SC, GA, AL, MS, LA, TX, FL — those states that seceded first), about 36.7% of the white families owned slaves.
In the Middle South (VA, NC, TN, AR — those states that seceded only after Fort Sumter was fired on) the percentage is around 25.3%, and the total for the two combined regions — which is what most folks think of as the Confederacy — is 30.8%.
In the Border States (DE, MD, KY, MO — those slave states that did not secede) the percentage of slave-ownership was 15.9%, and the total throughout the slave states was almost exactly 26%.
Confederate apologists will usually cite the number of legal slave owners, who were usually the heads of households, which of course drastically understates the percentage of the population that directly benefited from slavery, especially given the much larger families back then.
But I quite agree that once the war started most southerners were fighting against what they saw as northern aggression.
I support robust background checks for candidates running for the office of the President.
Like are they or are they not natural born citizens of the United States.
They "like" him because he teaches to the test instead of imparting knowledge. He also makes it known what views will incur his wrath, so better grades are more easily acquired.
Actually, that quote isn’t much different from sentiments you see regularly on FR.
If it had been up to Swindell types the story about the IRS targeting Conservatives wouldn't have been written... And the stuff about AP and Fox? Holder and goons would have been cheered on. What's a free press compared to revenge? Swindell types allow hatred to trump principle - he would have backed Holder.
Swindell's hatred of traditional American comes through loud and clear. And what is that hatred of millions of Americans based on? A song. A song I've never heard. Has he ever even spoken with a conservative? Maybe AT one, but never with one - we know his type. The guy's a hater. A bigot.
The reason traditional Americans need to own guns is because one of these days some midget with delusions of grandeur - some creep like Sindell - will be in power... and his hatred of people who don't think like he does will unleash a horror upon us.
I can spot an engineering major a mile away.
People who don’t own guns, who don’t have the courage to defend their own families or property, should have everything taken away from them. We could round them up like the sheep they are, and force them to work in heavily guarded labor camps. People who don’t own guns shouldn’t be allowed to vote, or participate in the politics of a free society. They are unwilling to defend their freedom. People who don’t own guns are the reason we have so many police and so many taxes to pay for them. They are the reason we have big, intrusive government. They are the reason we are in debt, and the reason this nation is becoming a third world dung hole. So there. Liberals are disgusting, intellectually inferior cretins who need mandatory gun training and indoctrination into civil society. So there.
My .380 1911 style only holds 7 in the well, and 1 in battery.
Yes, but usually it’s for actually getting people killed instead just disagreeing with their political views.
Progressives/Communists have to pretend that so many lies are the truth in order to enslave the White Devil that they hate so much.
They have to pretend that bringing a 2” plastic picnic knife to school to cut an apple is the same thing as bringing a 6” switchblade to school to stab a rival gang member.
They have to pretend that a person who owned guns since the age of twelve for hunting and personal protection and never used one to harm another human being in their entire life is the same thing as a gang-banger owning guns who only uses them for drive-by shootings, robberies and carjackings or an evil, crazy person stealing guns and shooting up a school.
They have to pretend that a law-abiding citizen who purchases moderate quantities of ammo every year for target practice and hunting is the same thing as a hardened convict who only needs one box of ammo in his entire criminal career.
They have to pretend that a hundred and fifty million gun owners should be condemned for the actions of a handful of crazies who shoot up schools and shopping malls, but that Moslems should not be condemned for a handful of crazies who hijack airplanes and crash them into buildings, or strap on homicide vests and blow up innocent people.
But we’re the ones who are the “gun nuts.”
On May 30, Henry gave his maiden speech in the assembly and defended his resolutions. He expanded the scope of his criticism to include not only Parliament, but the king as well. Speaking of George III, he stated that, Caesar had his Brutus, Charles the First his Cromwell and George the Third . At that point he was interrupted by cries of Treason! from delegates who easily recognized the reference to assassinated leaders. Henry paused briefly, then calmly finished his sentence: ...may profit by their example. If this be treason, make the most of it.
Seems Obama has his Swindell............
Bring it on, twinkle toes. We aren't the effeminate girly men you hang out with at the bathhouse. We know how to play for keeps.
The peace and love crowd speaks again. Not surprisingly in this guy’s mind the first amendment applies only to his side.
Urnalism is alive and well....
Going back to a little over 40 years ago when I was in college, I think I would have been able to hold my nose about his politics and enjoy his teaching. It was always nice to have a professor predictably teach what he was going to test on and “teaching to the test” that way definitely was not a failure to “impart knowledge.” Rather, it imparted the knowledge that as to be tested on, certainly a lot fairer than conveying a cloud of BS and expecting the students to guess what was important and to be tested on.
I guess that Swindell hasn't been paying attention to recent history. The Vietnamese, Iraqi's, or the Afghani's didn't have those high tech systems either. What they all did find however, was that the logistics tail is a much more vulnerable target.
J-schools have been the Marxist-thought producing equivalent of puppy mills for the last fifty years or so. if the research does not prove the party line, they lose it.
About the same time back for me. I loved that kind of instructor. Didn’t learn crap, but got a good grade. Thankfully, I didn’t waste but a semester in college.
Not yet. And he is getting eviscerated in the comments.
Swindell saves lots of money on hats. He need never fear sunburn on his scalp...
Treason? Try the Constitution on for size, Chris. And if you think the 80 million armed Americans would simply stand aside while the government brings those forces to bear against someone, you're deluding yourself, freak.
Swindell needs to have the shit pounded out of him.
I'm not entirely sure what the island of Crete or its inhabitants have to do with any of this, professor.
