An attempted robbery on the city’s south side turned deadly Saturday night for one of two men who approached a man standing outside his residence, Fort Wayne police said.

Police were called shortly after 11 p.m. on a report of a shooting at West Packard and South Wayne streets.

After talking with witnesses, police said an adult male was standing on or near the porch of his residence at Packard and South Wayne when he was approached by two men. The two men attempted to rob the resident, but he was armed with a handgun and fired several rounds striking one of his assailants several times.

The second suspect fled on foot and was last seen running north in the neighborhood. The suspect is described as a black male in his late teens to early 20s, 5-foot-6 with a medium build, last seen wearing a blue South Pole hooded jacket, black shorts, black socks and flip-flops.

During the encounter, the resident was shot in the foot. He was treated in a hospital and is in good condition, police said. The resident called police immediately to report the exchange of gunfire.

The robber who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene. A weapon was recovered near his body, police said.

Before the Supreme Court decision regarding Chicago’s gun laws, the resident would be lying dead. Luckily the resident was able to use a self-defense weapon (let’s start calling them that, instead of liberals’ favorite propaganda word “assault weapon”).

This is in Fort Wayne Indiana, not Chicago Illinois.

Would be interesting to hear the details of the shooting. Sounds like the bad guy had the drop on the innocent citizen, yet the citizen managed to defend himself quite well.
