~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Watervliet Arsenal, New York

Watervliet Arsenal, known as "America's Cannon Factory" is an Army owned and operated manufacturing facility located in New York, just outside Albany. Constructed in 1813, the Arsenal has played a vital role in America's defense throughout its long history producing large bore cannon and a wide variety of other products for military needs.

The billion dollar Arsenal manufacturing complex is situated on a 42 acre site and spans 72 buildings with 1.2 million square feet of manufacturing space. It is also home to the Army's Benet Laboratories, whose mission includes the development of Arsenal products and technology.

As a component of the Army Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command, Watervliet's products include tank cannon, artillery cannon, battleship guns, marine drives, scissor bridges, and rocket motors. This 72-building arsenal encompasses over 1.2 million square feet of manufacturing space and employs almost 2,000 personnel.

WVA's capabilities allow it to employ the latest manufacturing technologies to support rapid design, development, and testing of new products. It has extensive capabilities in metalworking as well as specialized processes.

The Arsenal underwent a substantial modernization program called Project REARM - or Renovation of Armament Manufacturing - in the 1980s which included building new facilities, procuring new manufacturing equipment, and implementing a new training program. In addition, a computer-integrated manufacturing program was initiated which includes shop floor and above-the-shop-floor systems.

WVA is also home to the Army's Benet Laboratories, part of the Army Research, Development, and Engineering Center at Picatinny, NJ. Benet maintains the primary mission of development of advanced cannon. Benet performs scientific and engineering activities which range from basic research through design for producibility.

It is responsible for the research, design, and development of tank cannon, tank mounts, tank autoloaders, artillery cannon, mortars, recoilless rifles and tank turret items. It also provides engineering support for the production of these items. Benet's collocation with the production facilities at WVA provides an excellent opportunity for concurrent engineering and rapid prototyping.

Good evening, Connie...*hugs*

Thanks for the red, white, and blue tributes.

Hope you had a good Monday. My morning was a zoo, that seemed to settle down a little in the afternoon.

Hope your commute was without incident. Piggies eat anything else?

I’m on the way home. Have to stop and try to get Impatiens for my Mom. Back in a bit.

Thanks very much, Kathy! The project did not end today - they're now saying it will go through the week. Some people have dropped off, which will probably ensure that it does. We had rain in the morning here - it's all gone east now - we're supposed to have a few really nice days coming up.

The storm last evening was so violent that it finished off my peonies for this year - they were beautiful for about five days!

Thanks, Kathy. It’s about 5 1/2 hours from here. I know the
route and depending on the traffic...I’m trying to get there
before rush hour...I should have no trouble finding my exit
and then the streets to turn off on after that.

That said, if I do get lost, I hope there is a search party! LOL!

Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

Pressing On

June 4, 2013

At a Christian men’s conference, I talked with a longtime friend who has encouraged and mentored me for many years. With him were two young men from China, new in their faith and deeply grateful for this man’s faithful friendship and spiritual help. My friend Clyde, nearing 80 years of age, glowed with enthusiasm as he said, “I’ve never been more excited about knowing and loving Christ than I am today.”

Paul’s letter to the Philippians reveals a heart and purpose that never diminished with time: “That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death” (Phil. 3:10). From the root of Paul’s relationship with Jesus came the fruit of his undiminished fervor that others be guided to faith in Him. He rejoiced to share the gospel and was encouraged that others became bolder because of him (1:12-14).

If our goal is merely service for the Lord, we may burn out somewhere along the line. But if our purpose, like Paul’s and Clyde’s and many others, is to know Christ and love Him, we’ll find that He will give us the strength to make Him known to others. Let us joyfully press on in the strength God gives!

Father God, I want to know You in all Your fullness and
to love You completely. I believe that relationship
with You is the basis for my service for You.
Help me not to serve out of my own strength.
Learn from Christ then make Him known.

Read: Philippians 1:12-18; 3:8-11

That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings. —Philippians 3:10
