~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Watervliet Arsenal, New York

Watervliet Arsenal, known as "America's Cannon Factory" is an Army owned and operated manufacturing facility located in New York, just outside Albany. Constructed in 1813, the Arsenal has played a vital role in America's defense throughout its long history producing large bore cannon and a wide variety of other products for military needs.

The billion dollar Arsenal manufacturing complex is situated on a 42 acre site and spans 72 buildings with 1.2 million square feet of manufacturing space. It is also home to the Army's Benet Laboratories, whose mission includes the development of Arsenal products and technology.

As a component of the Army Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command, Watervliet's products include tank cannon, artillery cannon, battleship guns, marine drives, scissor bridges, and rocket motors. This 72-building arsenal encompasses over 1.2 million square feet of manufacturing space and employs almost 2,000 personnel.

WVA's capabilities allow it to employ the latest manufacturing technologies to support rapid design, development, and testing of new products. It has extensive capabilities in metalworking as well as specialized processes.

The Arsenal underwent a substantial modernization program called Project REARM - or Renovation of Armament Manufacturing - in the 1980s which included building new facilities, procuring new manufacturing equipment, and implementing a new training program. In addition, a computer-integrated manufacturing program was initiated which includes shop floor and above-the-shop-floor systems.

WVA is also home to the Army's Benet Laboratories, part of the Army Research, Development, and Engineering Center at Picatinny, NJ. Benet maintains the primary mission of development of advanced cannon. Benet performs scientific and engineering activities which range from basic research through design for producibility.

It is responsible for the research, design, and development of tank cannon, tank mounts, tank autoloaders, artillery cannon, mortars, recoilless rifles and tank turret items. It also provides engineering support for the production of these items. Benet's collocation with the production facilities at WVA provides an excellent opportunity for concurrent engineering and rapid prototyping.

The drive in this morning was not so good - a little rain plus Monday morning makes things pretty ugly. The commute home was quite smooth - under 40 minutes.

Under our present work regime, I can get in 13 hours per day - we're capped at 60 per week. I'll reach that cap by Thursday. Then I thinks there's a bottle of 16 y/o Lagavulin calling to me!

Just kidding - that was one of our running jokes. That, and he would impart his wisdom to me saying that he had gotten it from a dying brave on the battlefield in the Indian Wars.

He started out in the Cavalry in the 30's - went Airborne in WWII. I first met him at Christmas, 1952 - he was home from Korea with a shattered arm. We were sitting at the table at my Great-Grandmother's for dinner, he looked across the table at me - with a glare that was reminiscent of Patton's - and said if I didn't eat my corn, I'd be court martialed. It all went uphill from there. Many great adventures.

LOL! I can see where things went up hill from there!

Well, he and my Dad might have rubbed elbows. My Dad was a Company Commander in the 7th Cav. when they were still partially mounted in 1939.

Then Dad went to the Presidio and was ADC to Gen. De Witt.

Then he took mules and communication equipment to India and Burma.

Was your uncle Jack in China, Burma, India?

As you probably know, Kathy’s Dad was CBI.

Whoops, I shouldn’t have asked if he was in CBI. There was only one Airborne unit in the Pacific.

My Uncle was ETO in WWII. Did not make it to CBI. Had boots on the ground in Nam in 60-61 just before he retired.

I think the 101st and 82nd were flagged to go to the Pacific for the big invasion of Japan. They’d gone through hell and didn’t even look forward to going to Japan....as you know.

God bless them all!
