A malfunctioning tranquilizer gun cost an 18-month-old black bear its life Sunday, prompting authorities to shoot and kill the juvenile bruin in a Newton tree above the Mass Pike, an environmental official said yesterday, citing public safety for the unpopular action.

“We did attempt a tranquilization, but the firearm … misfired,” said environmental police Lt. Col. Chris Baker.

He said the tranquilizer gun was inoperable, and there wasn’t another readily available. With the 135-pound male bear so close to the Pike and an MBTA line, the decision was made to kill the animal.

It’s just a bear, and human safety comes first.

Yes most places have plenty of black bears.

Killing one is no big deal.

The authorities did at least try to spare the animal its life, but that failed and the option of last resort became necessary.

I don’t understand what the uproar is about.

On the fence here. While it IS “just a bear”, it seems they could have gotten another tranquilizer gun. The bear was in a tree. He probably would have stayed in the tree with people right there. Semicircle around the tree between the tree and the Pike. If he comes down he goes the other way.

I think this looks like an excuse to use my gun. If it was a “dog” in that tree, they would have just shot it in the first place. (if dogs could climb trees, of course)

From the article..”It was unclear where the bear came from.”

Could the bear have possibly come from the often quoted location of where it shat? Quite the mystery.

Bingo. They could have called for another tranquilizer gun. It’s not like the bear was going anywhere. It was an excuse to shoot a “dog” in a tree.

Similar incidences happened in Eau Claire and La Crosse, Wisconsin a few years ago. In both situations a small, adult bear ran into a public park with many picnickers present and ascended a tree. DNR officials were called to the scene. Neither DNR personnel had tranquilizer guns, so the decision was made with the local police in both instances to kill the bears by shooting them.

Many people were upset, but the officers were between a rock and a hard place. They shot and killed the bears and were heavily criticized for "murdering" one of God's creatures. But if they hadn't shot and killed the bears, and the bears had come down out of trees and hurt some citizen(s), then they would have been criticized and subject to lawsuits for allowing private citizens to get hurt.

In my area there is a approx. 350 LBS black bear terrorizing a walking trail in the local national park. It’s not afraid of humans and has stood on two legs, roared and ran after a couple of walkers.

Traps were being set for it and it was going to be put down by the rangers when caught.

Humans first, critters second.
