NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)-- The warning on the busiest crossings in New Haven is stenciled in bright orange. It's designed to promote safety for distracted pedestrians.
The bright orange message says "Don't read this, look up."
It caught Michele Pepe's eye.
"It's on all four corners," said Pepe. When asked if she read it, she said, "yes I did. I think people have to put their cell phones away and to pay attention to what's going on around them before crossing the street."
Over the weekend, members of the Yale Traffic Safety Subcommittee stenciled it in at some of the most dangerous intersections in New Haven.
Pedestrian safety is foremost on their minds. A medical student died at the intersection in 2008. Police say the driver of the car had a green light at the time.
Near misses happen all the time says Ashley Von Britton.
"I think it's a good idea because I see a lot of people on foot on their cell phones and stuff, and I'd be wondering sometimes if you don't pick your head up because, especially this strip right here, you would want to pay attention because sometimes people have a habit of running the light," said Von Britton.
We caught up with Anna Blazejowskyj at this corner texting.
"It's interesting but I don't see anything up there though," said Blazejowskyj.
She wasn't the only one with a similar thought.
"I have no idea what to think of it," said Scott Aoki.
A suggestion from Anna.
"You might want to put a notion about like in parenthesis underneath to tell people to stop texting because people will look up, up," said Blazejowskyj. When asked if she will try to follow this, she said, "I'll try."
Most were uncertain people will actually pay attention.
"I think people will be just like speed limit signs or whatever, they'll ignore it and do whatever they want to do, even if it might save their life," said Aoki.
You'll see the orange warnings, mostly at corners in the area of Yale-New Haven Hospital. In the fall, plans are to put them at crossing points in the middle of Yale's campus.
How about we just let these idiots be thinned from the gene pool? *SNORT*
The best and brightest...
If you don’t read it how will you know to look up?
I agree.
Ped in front of me yesterday. IT was 90 degrees had his hoodie up with earphones texting and walking. I couldn’t tell if he was crossing or walking down the street as he was moving @ a 40 degree angle! I slowed and and waited at least 5 minutes before moving forward. He never even saw me!
One thing is certain if there is ped in the street I’m stopping. I get horns but I ain’t hittin one of those poor amish kids!
Just yesterday it was being reported we have lost 14 IQ points over the last 100 years. I disagree. We’ve lost many more points.
Falling into fountain. Hilarious and much deserved.
Have you noticed that a lot of people do not even look up when they step onto the street???
Well cars are a lot quieter now also, but with music blaring in your ear your not gonna hear a Harley either!
