Despite the looming bankruptcy of electric carmaker Fisker Automotive, and disappointing sales of electric vehicles across the country, the Obama administration has harnessed some of the countrys top scientists, engineers, economists and auto experts to push electric car use deeper into the fabric of American society.
Among the ideas being considered: new and bigger consumer subsidies for electric-car purchases, stiffer gasoline or carbon taxes, more federal subsidies for electric-car research, more subsidies for public-access battery-charging stations, and even broad, publicly-funded ad campaigns extolling the virtues of cars that the public currently seems disinterested in buying.
Those possibilities, and more, have been rolled out in an 80-page interim report of a committee of the National Academy of Sciences which aims to put intellectual heft, as well as vast amounts of data-collection, behind a U.S. Department of Energy goal of producing -- and selling --electric cars that are as affordable and convenient for American families as gasoline powered cars -- by 2022.
In other words, despite the fact that electric cars have so far been largely a flop, the administration is still looking for ways -- backed by government funding and tax policy -- to produce even more of them, and rewire America. And in some critical ways, as the interim study points out, it still isnt known whether the electric car idea makes any sense.
The interim document was issued without much fanfare by the National Academy on May 14 --just as Delaware-based Fisker was staggering toward bankruptcy. It is the precursor to a much more detailed report on the same topic that is slated to appear a year from now -- just as the 2014 congressional election campaign hits full stride.

All he is trying to do is drive up the cost of motor vehicles to the point that the vast majority of peasants forego them and climb on board the affirmative-action run "public transportation" system, where Eric Holder's people will have an easier time accessing them for impromptu tournaments of "Knockout King."
What does he care? In his lifetime he will never have to drive again/ The secret Service will chauffer him in Government vehicles for the rest of his miserable life.
Agreed, it’s just another method of control.
Does Øbama he own and drive one?
of course not, , ,
Just promoting commerce...
and by promoting, I mean shoving it down our throats at our expense.
Besides, what would happen if, by some miracle, we all switched over to all electric cars?
No one has considered the impact it might have on the power company. The same power company that is probably coal fired or burns some kind of “pollutant” to produce electricity.
Even if it takes years to switch over, it is going to be VERY costly to upgrade the system... even if the environmentalists would allow it and that is a big “if.”
The ‘Electric Car’ is the perfect analogy of the Obamugabe Administration.
Free People don’t want it.
Free People don’t need it.
It is very expensive to have.
You can’t make it work..........
and wasting tax money so it will not result in anything useful to the country. he can payback friends, get kickbacks, spend us into deeper debt, and make sure we have nothing useful to show for it.
Electric cars.
Because it is so much more efficient to burn fossil fuels to generate electricity, and then transfer that electricity over 100 miles of power lines, with transmission loss the whole way, and then charge your electric car, than to just power the car with the fossil fuels.
Electricity likely generated from burning fossil fuels.
Just bought a new pick up with a 360 HP V-8 and a car with a 288 HP V-6, vroom-vroom jug ears!
The end game is not to force us all into electric cars ... it is to force us into cattle cars ... er ... public tranportation.
You must've overlooked the 50 million other postings on FR alone, that speculated the impact on electric utilities.
Agreed.
But the people spending the money, our tax dollars, conveniently ingore it. And the rest of the population who think that wind power and solar will rescue us from a certain end continue to vote for people who sell this snake oil.
