The FBI is unhappy that there are communications technologies that it cannot intercept, and wants a new requirement that software makers and communications companies create a back door so they can listen in when they want.
But a team of technology experts warns that would be nothing more than handing over to the nation’s enemies abilities they are not capable of developing for themselves.

According to a recent report in the Washington Post, the issue is being raised by the FBI because “there is currently no way to wiretap some of these communications methods easily, and companies effectively…”
The solution, according to the FBI, is a plan to fine companies when they fail to comply with wiretap orders, essentially requiring all companies to build a back door for wiretap capabilities into all their communications links.
“The importance to us is pretty clear,” FBI general counsel Andrew Weissman said in the report. “We don’t have the ability to go to court and say, ‘We need a court order to effectuate the intercept.’”
But a report at the Center for Democracy & Technology warns of the unintended consequences.....

The tyrants are becoming emboldened. I suggest scrapping the FBI and starting over.
Any back door given the FBI would be hacked and that back door run through regularly.
We knew this would be the ultimate hazard of the Patriot Act.
And it is not like they won’t just demand all the records etc. anyway...without a warrant.
Heck...just look at Verizon handing over records already.
So one traitor can give away everything in America with one phone call/text?

It’s push, push, push, 24/7/365. Overwhelm someone with BS often enough and they’ll just throw up their hands and walk away from it all. Which IS the plan after all. Intended consequences and all that.
On the other hand there are Unintended Consequences too.

The FBI has now declared ITS WAR against the American
people and the US Constitution.
Its hard to watch my old TV series showing FBI (as good guys)!
It’s not a back door. It’s an entranceway specially designed to let the gov in. And it’s illegal no matter what it’s called.
I’ll never view Efrem Zimbalist Jr (”FBI”) in the same way, as I once did, either.
In 1998, 15 years ago, I was discussing encryption with a friend and we thought we’d try encrypted emails out.
We both downloaded a Swedish copy of PGP and installed it on our respective systems.
We exchanged public keys and then exchanged our very first encrypted emails, mins just said “Cool” and my friends said “Yeah, it is cool.”
Within 16 hours we each got messages from the FBI stating that using encryption not approved by the government was a felony and that we should immediately remove the encryption from our systems or we’d be prosecuted.
For reasons of WTF, we removed the encryption systems and never installed them again.
Don’t forget Stasi of East German heritage.
That’s curious.
I was using PGP-encrypted e-mail fairly commonly back in that era, and never got any such warning.
