GOP’s Emmer Jumps Into Minn.’s 6th District Race

The Republican candidate for governor in 2010 is trying for a political comeback as he joins the race to succeed Michele Bachmann in Congress.

Tom Emmer was announcing his campaign Wednesday in his hometown of Delano. Emmer says his narrow 2010 governor’s race loss to Mark Dayton will make him a stronger candidate, and that he wants to follow in Bachmann’s footsteps fighting what he called “the ever-growing size of government.”

Emmer is an attorney, former state representative and talk radio host. On Wednesday morning, Republican Party Chairman Keith Downey told WCCO Radio that while he was not quite ready to throw his former support behind Emmer, he recognized he “would obviously be the one with the highest name recognition to enter the race.”

My personal choice to succeed Michele Bachmann. I'm going to miss him on the radio, though.

Had it not been for underhanded Minnesota politics Emmer would have beaten Mark Dayton for the governor’s office. Now Minnesota has a Democrat governor and house and, guess what?, taxes are going up. Smokers will be paying for the new Vikings stadium to the tune of a new $1.60 per pack tax. Minnesota desperately needs Emmer.

This should be a landslide, barring some sort of major faux pas on Tom’s part.

I was happy to pull the lever for Michele. I’m just as happy to pull it for Tom. At least he gives me a reason to go to the polls :)

Insider presentation by WCCO. Assumption being everybody knows the 6th district is the one Bachmann represents.

Should have explained that the Minnesota 6th congressional district is Michele Bachmanns district. Bet even though there was lot of coverage about Bachmann there many Minnesotans don’t know what congressional district they live in let alone where the 6th is .

“Bachmann has held the 6th district seat since being elected in 2006 over Democratic candidate Patty Wetterling and Independent candidate John Binkowski.”

Have you been watching the news?

The media is working on that as we type. First thing they mentioned was Tom's "chemical castration" comment, but they let off the adjective "chemical" in the tease.

Most conservatives would agree that that would be an appropriate sentence for a child rapist, liberals would not.

Gonna be a rough one - wonder if a Minnesota hockey player can take it? snicker

I met Emmer once. Awesome guy, I always thought he could do better in a national spotlight.

He first came to my attention because I taught his kids.

You can discern a great deal about a man by looking at his family.

His kids were good without being too good, confident but not cocky - obviously well-raised.

In addition, his boys are all Kennedy/Romney handsome and his daughter was Homecoming Queen.

I see a national stage in their future.

Tom Emmer's son has followed in his father's footsteps around alcohol related offenses. These also involve posting of photos that frankly look like possible indictions of offenses towards a young woman that may have been under age of consent. I am sure Emmer's son was very good at impression management. Frankly, I would NOT want this young man dating my daughter-and I have had stern conversations with young people over far less marked offenses

Emmer's DWI record suggests a record of problem drinking. I would encourage him to publicly post doctor supervised ETG hair tests that would measure his average level of alcohol consumption and support his claim he is no longer a problem drinker or alcoholic-and is fit for office. The stresses of serving in congress will likely make any underlying problem worse.

I am personally tired of leaders like Ted Kennedy setting a bad example for the public by their own habits. The position of Congressional Representative carries with it a degree of immunity from arrest. However with that privilege there should come responsibility. Exempting those in power from rules the rest of us live by has serious problems-and is frankly unamerican.

As it stands now Emmer has called for drug testing of all welfare recipients-but his statements on his own addiction issues are guarded and contradictory. This hurt him in his race for governor-against an opponent that seemed candid about his own battles with alcoholism. I also have reservations around some of Emmer's financial practices.

Wow, first time I've received such a late reply.

Did you score the site for Emmer supporters?
