DETROIT (WJBK) -
An FBI agent almost shot a Detroit cop on Wednesday at a gas station while filling up. It wasn't the agent or the cop's fault. It was the cop's bosses, who came up with the lame brain idea to simulate a purse snatching and then invite a TV crew to film your reaction Detroit. The immediate supervisor of these cops had no idea this was happening until they called him.
"The event takes place. The officer takes the purse, runs around the gas station. As he's running, an off-duty FBI agent is pumping gas. He witnesses the whole thing. He gives chase. He pulls his weapon, and as he turns the corner around the gas station, he's stopped by another officer, who identifies herself as a police officer and don't shoot, don't shoot, this is a scenario," said Inspector Shawn Gargalino with the Detroit Police Department.
That is the same description of events we got from four other ranking law enforcement officials, including Lieutenant Chuck Flannagan, a 28-year veteran of DPD.
"It's a tragedy waiting to happen. In fact, I understand an FBI agent did pull a weapon because he didn't believe it was a staged, and some officers had to run forward to prevent him from possibly shooting an officer. We have enough robberies at gas stations that most people aren't going to assume it's a mock robbery," he said.
"You had citizens who could've been hurt. A lot of people out here have CPLs now and carry weapons. They're tired of the crime that's going on in Detroit, and they might want to stand up and help somebody that's in this type of situation. It just so happened it's a gas station where the FBI fills up all their vehicles," Gargalino said.

Here’s a scenario. Fake holdup staged by police. Honest, law-abiding citizen sees holdup and intervenes. Fake perp points gun at citizen. Citizen defends self and shoots fake perp.
If the police arrest the citizen they are all fascists and need to be put in jail. (I don’t care if this angers anyone)
TF Bad for the fake perp. Tough. That’s the way it is. The citizen can only act on the information available to him at the time of the act. The citizen is innocent and the police who staged it are responsible for the death. End of discussion.
So much to do and so little time to do it in!

Detroit rots.
The pension gurus are frolicking in Hawaii at a “conference” to rival the IRS’s.
The cops are playing cops and robbers, without the street bosses knowing.
And Detroit rots.
So much to do and so little time to do it in!

It’s funny that they are never around when the real crime is happening. To busy picking out their favorite donuts.
If they wanted to make a public service video (pointless in my opinion) there are certainly better ways of doing it.
Use an empty gas station, put up some police tape and signs to keep people out, and post a few obvious cops around to make sure.
Only one problem...and it's a BIG one.
A citizen shoots the perp, who is actually a cop, with many other cops probably in the area for training, back-up, or whatever......and you think the citizen would be ARRESTED????.
You’re assuming there anybody with a minimum amount of intelligence and common sense left in the Detroit PD & government. It’s now filled with leeches and freeloaders.
Didn’t a school in Michigan just have a “fake” terrorist attack a couple months ago that no one told the teachers about? Sheer stupidity and they are lucky no one was killed.
I hadn’t heard about a fake terrorist attack but a school near Selfridge ANG base was shut down due to an airman walking down the hall in cammo. (he was stopping in to say hi to a former teacher.)
Except that as soon as the citizen pulls his gun, all the cops will likely shoot him dead. Assuming he didn’t have a dog, in which case they’d shoot the dog first, and probably a bystander and maybe a car parked nearby.

So...who was in charge of “background research”?
I think that this experiment should be filed under “don’t try this anywhere”. If it was done in Tennessee, especially away from the big liberal cities (Memphis, etc.), shots likely would have been fired.
Let em add something to your scenario:
(1) Actual thug attempts hold-up and when chased by a CFL holder, turns and says, “This is a DPD staged robbery, don’t shoot.”
CFL lowers his guard and real thug kills him and escapes.
(2) Fake-thug is chased by samaritan CFL holder and is gunned down by a DPD officer assigned to the fake robbery.
Shooting DPD officer says, “I was compelled to protect my fellow officer.”
As a side note, when my dad retired from the DPD back around 1978, he was the Executive Lt. at the 13th precinct under an inspector named Blount, a real POS who was a beneficiary of affirmative action that had taken over the police dept. in the '70's.
What amazes me is that they’d have to stage a purse snatching in Detroit. Why not just wait five minutes?
