Hayward school to sponsor toy gun exchange
Mercury News ^ | June 6, 2013 | Rebecca Parr

HAYWARD -- An elementary school will hold a toy gun exchange Saturday, offering students a book and a chance to win a bicycle if they turn in their play weapons.

Strobridge Elementary Principal Charles Hill maintains that children who play with toy guns may not take real guns seriously.

"Playing with toys guns, saying 'I'm going to shoot you,' desensitizes them, so as they get older, it's easier for them to use a real gun," Hill said.

Well, they’d be real unhappy with my 9 year old girl’s scoped BB gun.

Yeah, teaching them that guns are inherently evil is perfectly fine.

Overreach. Standard Operational Procedure of the Left. In Hayward I’d imagine it will work though.

This doesn’t verge on the ridiculous, It IS ridiculous.

I played with toy guns when I was a kid 60 years ago and I take guns very seriously.

Is this guy for real?
What a frigging idiot.

Now we have kids getting suspended for eating a cookie that looks like a gun and this fool is having a toy gun buy back.

Give me a frigging break.

I cannot believe the Bullshyt that some people put out.

Excuuuuuuuse me!

I thought there was zero tolerance these days!!!!

How can these little squirms get away with bringing a toy gun to a school sanctioned event?

The local police should raid the event and arrest some teachers for contributing to the delinquency...

It’s a trap!

They’re going to arrest all the kids that show up - zero tolerance ya know. They want to justify holding cells at the school.

How about offering the kids a better deal than a “buy back”? I bet it would drive the gun grabbers nuts.

They can exchange their cheesy looking toy guns for better toy guns. It likely wouldn’t cost much, but would be purely for entertainment value.

A new level of stupid. If a kid brings in his bright orange squirt gun to school. Does he get a book, a chance on the bike and suspension for bringing the toy gun to school?

Hey, that was my idea! :^) saw your note

I’d wager they don’t care if they get one toy gun. The important part is to demonize guns in the minds of these poor little kids.

I hope one of them doesn’t point a finger at someone. Swat could kill someone...

It’s a trap.

When the kids bring their plastic toy guns to school, the principal will suspend them, and then demand the police search their parent’s house.

My son was expelled (on the day of the OKC bombing) for possession of a 2” fluorescent orange squirt gun (he found on the walk to school). He had given it to his middle school sweetie, because it was her last day - she was moving out of state, and he wanted to give her something to remember him by. Yah, dopey sentimentalism runs in the family.

We had to go to the safe schools program run by the district, where the district cop running the assembly told the audience that the only people who can carry a gun at a public school are cops (in contradiction to state CCW law). I grabbed my son’s hand and patted my SP101 on my hip, under my jacket.

We didn’t go back, and he went to private school. His younger siblings were home schooled, and yes, proper firearms cleaning, safe use, law, and target aquisition, ballistics, trajectory and reloading were included in the curriculum.

I could use your home school course on reloading.

I’ve never been exposed to that.

Can’t say enough good things about home schooling. Better to have less income and raise some good kids.

Oh, and welding/fabrication was in his schooling - he fabricated a stainless kiln to cast parts, and he’s mastered the machinist lathe. I suppose a 3D printer is next ...

What strikes me about Holder in the video is that his life experience is so unlike mine. I am inferring that, since he doesn’t talk about his life experience, but I intuitively know that his experience has led him to his stance on guns/violence. I seriously believe that people who grow up and live in cities have no idea what it is to be free. Holder completely believes what he is saying is good for every American. It is kind of ironic that people from areas where there crime and violence never look at the things people do from locations where there is no crime and violence. The same logic can be applied to poverty, illiteracy, and just about any negative behavior. In every case where things work best there is less government.

Parents should be ****** at this. Schools have no right to cajole little impressionable kids into bringing in *anything* that their parents purchased with their hard-earned money (that makes it the parents' PROPERTY!) as a gift for their children, only to have it, in effect, taken from those kids by the schools, perhaps without the parents' knowledge or permission, in return for some cheap book that in all likelihood is a piece of socialist trash.

It may have been the kid's squirt gun that he had at home, which he never "threatened" anyone with, never took it to school, etc. But, no... "You go home, little Johnny like a thief in the night and steal something out of your parents' house and bring it here to us."

Eff that! That's what a fence or a pusher does when little Johnny is an all grown up little socialist, like his teachers, and is hooked on coke and needs a little extra cash to get more coke.

I'm sorry. I'm ******! Is there still such a thing as a class action lawsuit?
