Boundless Informant: the NSA's secret tool to track global surveillance data
Guardian UK ^ | Saturday 8 June 2013 15.10 EDT | Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill

The National Security Agency has developed a powerful tool for recording and analysing where its intelligence comes from, raising questions about its repeated assurances to Congress that it cannot keep track of all the surveillance it performs on American communications.

The Guardian has acquired top-secret documents about the NSA datamining tool, called Boundless Informant, that details and even maps by country the voluminous amount of information it collects from computer and telephone networks.

There’s no alternative but for the entire executive branch to step down or be taken down. Americans won’t trust any of them for decades.

The NYTimesCNNCBSABCNBC news blockade has been breeched by the Guardian.

Thank God for the Brits.

I think that NSA should go back to putting a man

So whatever happened to “loose lips” on FR? Linked story has TOP SECRET/SI/NOFORN slides detailing intelligence targeting of foreign countries.

Because of the invented issue of profiling, all citizens must surrender our personal liberties as enumerated in the 1st and 4th Amendments.

This is what group rights look like.

The primary activity of the NSA is monitoring foreign threat communications. Some of those comms end up passing through the US.

You can disagree with it and want it stopped, but they jumped through the legal hoops needed to get the monitoring they are doing approved.

The NSA leaker has broken all the laws that Bradley Manning broke, but more seriously.

Go read the Manning threads on FR. The hypocrisy we are now seeing is hilarious.

Incorrect. U.S. Congressmen are on public record saying the NSA is not following the law.

Treason.

Aid them and you become complicit.

How well did they do monitoring the threat communications of Tamerlan Tsarnaev? Not very well I would say. Well, you might say, they stopped hundreds of other plots we don't know about and maybe TT never spoke on the phone about his plots. To that I say: bullshit.

There is no conceivable way that data collected by spying on Americans can be used to stop terrorist plots. They are collecting vast amount of disparate bits of data that cannot be connected to stop a plot. Look at the quality of the Russian data on Tsarnaev, vastly higher quality than anything allowed here since they have no fourth amendment protections. They gave the data to the FBI and the FBI investigated and decided to do nothing.

With the data described in recent articles (call records and possibly extracted keywords), NSA would be providing 100 times the volume with a lot less quality to the FBI who would be able to less than nothing with it. The alternative is that the NSA hooks up pieces of information to make it higher quality. If you believe that is possible you are probably a data mining salesman or a just clueless.

Another great laugh/cry is the Patriot Act.

The idea that Gov't would only follow the 'intent' of the law is absurd.

Never trust Gov't. That gets lost in 'War'. War is the protocol to get rid of Rights.

Lol. Nobody stopped and asked why the NSA would need Data Mall. Duh, collect everything. Everyone is a suspect, the data is kept until it can be used against you, for anything.

The bigger laugh is on media. Liberal, Conservative, whatever, how many dam times did Talk Radio ram the Patriot Act down our throats and to support 'Gov't' now. What a joke.
