Trial begins for George Zimmerman, accused of murdering Florida teen Trayvon Martin

The trial of George Zimmerman, the Florida neighborhood watch captain accused of murdering teen Trayvon Martin while on patrol, begins Monday with jury selection.

The February 12, 2012, incident in central Florida sparked a fierce national debate about such issues as gun control, equal justice and race after Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, fatally shot Martin, a black teenager.

There is no disputing that Zimmerman fired his 9-mm. handgun after calling police, exiting his pickup truck to follow Martin, then getting into a fight with the 17-year-old on a rainy night inside the gated Retreat at Twin Lakes community.

The 29-year-old Zimmerman, who had a concealed weapon permit, has admitted to shooting Martin in the chest.

But Zimmerman says the teen circled back and attacked him as he walked back to his truck – punching him in the face and slamming the back of his head into the sidewalk.

“Like the majority of American states, Florida does not mandate that victims of a violent crime attempt to retreat before they defend themselves. The retreat rule is irrelevant, regardless of whether you believe Trayvon’s advocates or Mr. Zimmerman’s advocates.”

I’m not optimistic about any jury in America, esp. in liberal FL.

It’s unanimous verdicts for murder in 48 states. LA and OR allow 10/12, I believe. Maybe it’s 11/12 in OR.

News outlets don’t hire real editors, anymore. An “editor” is now a commissar of the politikal apparatik.

"The only thing that is going to matter is the jury selection."

Sad but absolutely true. Zimmerman will be convicted, despite all evidence to the contrary.

If there are more than 6 blacks on the jury, Zimmerman will be convicted. My bet, the verdict has already been written.

Jury selection is critical no doubt. The defense attorney has stated in news reports
that he doesn’t expect to find jurors who haven’t heard of the case but is looking
for those that haven’t made up their mind regarding guilt or innocence. He also
thinks the jury selection can take up to two or three weeks. The jury is composed of
six jurors and two alternates. Some articles I’ve read say four alternates.

“Under Florida law, a person can lawfully shoot somebody in self-defense to prevent their own death or great bodily harm.”

And it is up to the prosecution to prove, BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT, that that is not what happened. I would not want to be on that team unless every palm in the jury was heavily greased.

Your post reminded me of something I heard on NPR this morning regarding the case:

Though the judge said that Z’s defense team can’t bring up Martin’s past, she actually created a mine field for the prosecution. If they mention during court proceedings anything about Martin’s character, Z’s team can pull up evidence to contradict that assertion. This means all the evidence she said is not admissable.

IOW, she said it is not admissable unless the subject of Martin’s character is touched by the prosecution.

:-)

Seeing this is a Fox article, I wanted to ask this question...Has Fox abandoned George Zimmerman?

Hannitty has not mentioned George for weeks. For sure Mark O`mera would have loved/wanted to be interviewed on his show

Fox most definitely had been planning on actually covering a lot of major hours of the trial, but now because of ratings bonanza on all Obama scandals, doubtful they will show more than a few moments a day.

Even here, I dont see any front page news story, or under breaking news...yes the reg faithful like Uncle Chip etc,
But, seems as if its taking back seat.

A lot of Fox coverage has been from prosecution point of view, Meagan Kelly has already tried and convicted him, I have no use for her

Fox attitude towards George may be a bit phony, was like we got your back George, but now you are on your own because we cant squeeze you in because of Obama scandals

Just how I see it, dont think Fox is going to cover it other than some talk over with trial in background for few moments on the hour at best, not as they had originally planned

Just how I see it

Good one, but even with that, could not be worse than HLN.

BTW Fox is not even going to cover the trial...I mean NOT in a serious way as they had planned. Nope because of the multiple scandals from WH, Fox is only going to have couple daily segments as the talk over coverage of trial.

At least that`s what I believe. Shawn Hannitty has abandoned George it seems

If Fox doesn’t cover responsibly, Zimmerman will spend life in prison (won’t last 6 month, imho.)
