The vast majority of Chinese still live in rural areas, much like they did a hundred years ago.....Even if there are 300 million that live like us in the US, that still leaves another Billion that don’t.

I drove hours North of Beijing onto dirt roads, and drove hours East of that this week.

I saw people, but not many. How do you hide 1.3 Billion people?!

I rode their buses in Beijing. Some full. Some empty.
I rode their subways. Some full. Some empty.

None packed like the subways of Tokyo.

I walked miles of their Great Wall without ever seeing another soul from horizon to horizon.

Stunning rural emptyness. Lots and lots of trees. One or two birds here and there, mostly crows in the countryside and small wrens (no pigeons!) in the city.
