BEIJING -- Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old contractor identified as the source of leaks about the U.S. electronic surveillance program, apparently checked out of his Hong Kong hotel at midday Monday, his destination and whereabouts unknown.
"We know he was here until today," said Cosmo Beatson, a Hong Kong-based refugee activist who heads an organization called Vision First.
Beatson said Monday night it is possible that Snowden boarded a plane from Hong Kong -- since there is no warrant for his arrest -- or was smuggled onto one of the many illegal speedboats smuggling people and goods between mainland Chinese and Hong Kong. Hes very mobile.
Britain's Guardian newspaper videotaped an interview with Snowden at the Hong Kong hotel, and posted it on Sunday. Since then, Snowden may have discovered that Hong Kongs unique geopolitics made it a poor choice for seeking asylum.
Unlike China, the semiautonomous territory of Hong Kong has an extradition treaty with the United States that has been in place since January 1998. Although the treaty gives Beijing the right to veto an extradition on national security grounds, experts do not expect the Chinese government will want to confront Washington on Snowdens behalf.
U.S. citizens can enter Hong Kong without a visa, but are usually given stays of only 90 days. After that, Snowden would face deportation or extradition.

This may get REALLY interesting REALLY fast.
Obama drone strike in 3... 2... 1...
I read that suspicion today, a Chinese spy.
I’m sure he was gone long before the interviews were published.
I wonder if he has a Gene Hackman-type guy helping him like Will Smith did in Enemy of the State.
Has anyone checked Ft. Marcy Park?
Is that where Obama stores the dead bodies ?
He knows the game, and he knows the score. If he was smart, he should have been in his final destination under protection, before the first indicator leaked out. Then a carefully crafted false trail to send the forces on a wild goose chase for a while.
When the USG has got it in for you, it is relentless, and you don’t want to end up like Assange, cowering in an embassy as the USG slowly tightens the screws on that country until they turn you out.

(Chuckling) Oh really! On what facts do they base this little bit of reporting? Seems more like a child’s wish than hard-headed analysis.
Agreed. He's probably in Bora Bora, Ecuador, or perhaps Nebraska or someplace.
Is that off a milk carton?
He and Julian Assange and, if he avoids execution, Bradley Manning will all end up in Ecuador waging cyberwar against the US Government.
