BEIJING -- Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old contractor identified as the source of leaks about the U.S. electronic surveillance program, apparently checked out of his Hong Kong hotel at midday Monday, his destination and whereabouts unknown.
"We know he was here until today," said Cosmo Beatson, a Hong Kong-based refugee activist who heads an organization called Vision First.
Beatson said Monday night it is possible that Snowden boarded a plane from Hong Kong -- since there is no warrant for his arrest -- or was smuggled onto one of the many illegal speedboats smuggling people and goods between mainland Chinese and Hong Kong. Hes very mobile.
Britain's Guardian newspaper videotaped an interview with Snowden at the Hong Kong hotel, and posted it on Sunday. Since then, Snowden may have discovered that Hong Kongs unique geopolitics made it a poor choice for seeking asylum.
Unlike China, the semiautonomous territory of Hong Kong has an extradition treaty with the United States that has been in place since January 1998. Although the treaty gives Beijing the right to veto an extradition on national security grounds, experts do not expect the Chinese government will want to confront Washington on Snowdens behalf.
U.S. citizens can enter Hong Kong without a visa, but are usually given stays of only 90 days. After that, Snowden would face deportation or extradition.

Lincoln bedroom, WH?
This may get REALLY interesting REALLY fast.
Obama drone strike in 3... 2... 1...
I read that suspicion today, a Chinese spy.
I’m sure he was gone long before the interviews were published.
I wonder if he has a Gene Hackman-type guy helping him like Will Smith did in Enemy of the State.
Has anyone checked Ft. Marcy Park?
Check a street corner in Brentwood.
Is that where Obama stores the dead bodies ?
He knows the game, and he knows the score. If he was smart, he should have been in his final destination under protection, before the first indicator leaked out. Then a carefully crafted false trail to send the forces on a wild goose chase for a while.
When the USG has got it in for you, it is relentless, and you don’t want to end up like Assange, cowering in an embassy as the USG slowly tightens the screws on that country until they turn you out.

(Chuckling) Oh really! On what facts do they base this little bit of reporting? Seems more like a child’s wish than hard-headed analysis.
Agreed. He's probably in Bora Bora, Ecuador, or perhaps Nebraska or someplace.
Is that off a milk carton?
He and Julian Assange and, if he avoids execution, Bradley Manning will all end up in Ecuador waging cyberwar against the US Government.
The Resume of NSA Leaker Edward Snowden: Stunning (High school drop-out makes $200K year?)
Maybe they “disappeared” him.
“......Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old contractor .....apparently checked out of his Hong Kong hotel at midday Monday, his destination and whereabouts unknown....”
Well, if he’s not in mainland China proper now, check Hong Kong harbor for a fresh “floater”.
A caller on Rush was theorizing that the Chi-coms were backing him...
He had mentioned Iceland and I read later Iceland was trying to reach him to tell him to come there. He will be safe there evidently from deportation to the states.
I was going to say, chumming the waters of Macao.
Probably no part bigger than a finger.
More stuff about him, including his political contributions to Ron Paul.
It’s been reported that his salary was $200,000
The New Yorker doesn’t like him. Their blog titled “Edward Snowden is No Hero, they call him “a grandiose narcissist who deserves to be in prison. “
Interesting to see who is for and who’s against Snowden...apparently not following party lines.
let’s hope the kid gave some thought to his own security before opening his mouth. The kid is in the big leagues now, and it should not come as a surprise that some would want his mouth shut......forever.... to warn others.
Someone on a thread told me the CIA does not kill people, that they have rules they go by. That poster was naive. As you say, accidents can happen.
Yes..isn't it. The constitution is being trashed by some crooks and all these people can think of is the old way of doing things they are accustom to based on outdated rules and oaths from the 80's. Bizarre.
What would these people do if we really had a corrupt regime in place (most believe that time is now)?...just exactly what they are doing now. Nothing.
People, we don't have any criteria for treason in this country anymore...please try to keep up.
into the bowels of Communist China
The Chi-Coms/North Koreans/Cubans/Venezuleas money is just as good as the West’s
Run, Snowden. Run!
College is for suckers anymore. Why go in deep debt only to listen to the commie professors? Makes no sense....
I took a correspondence course, so to speak, tested out on almost everything. Cost me a small fraction of what most people pay. Employers didn’t seem to mind.
Yet they adore PFC Bradley Manning and his Australian mentor.
He was making $200 large in his contractor gig.
Does not matter, college does not make someone smart. Watch the 12 minute interview he gave and you will see a highly articulate and extremely intelligent person. The government knows this and I expect him to end up in Gitmo soon; right or wrong.
I am betting he was a drug addict who wasn’t in his right mind. They will find him two weeks from now in a hotel room with a needle still in his arm.
So is this the last we hear from him? He gone?
That was I predict. He will not be heard from or seen again. Most will think he is hiding and living in fear. Reality he ends up in secret prison debriefed and discarded.
Thirty years ago Russia was seen as evil doers and spies would defect to America. What have we become.
Maybe he was in Iceland all along
