Germany has dropped its opposition to starting talks on an EU-US free trade agreement, leaving France alone to battle for exemptions for European artists.
Today, Germany has withdrawn its concerns and will approve a negotiating mandate for the EU commission on Friday, German economy ministry spokeswoman Julia Schwartz said on Wednesday (12 June) at a press conference in Berlin.
EU trade ministers are to take a decision on the Unions free trade blueprint at a meeting in Luxembourg at the end of this week.
Germany had earlier sided with France in saying that culture should be exempt from the new pact, in a bid to protect European film makers and musicians from being gobbled up by US competitors. Its U-turn leaves France with only the European Parliament on its side.

Great another free trade agreement. At least this one isn’t with low wage countries, but it still makes us ever more entangled and dependent on foreign countries.
Doubt it will happen. Citizens of the EU are amongst the most anti-free trade on the planet.
Citizens aren’t in control over in the EU. The elites are.
With their levels of social benefits, they would become the least-competitive free traders on the planet.
The elites would try to adjust and the whole place would be one seething riot within three weeks.
They’ll just use any social unrest as a pretext for more centralized control. The game is all about power, to them.
Nothing demonstrates stupidity more than doing a free trade deal with the poster child of failed free trade....the EU
There is not enough socialism to cover the stench from this rotting carcass
