Sebelius: Kids 'So Far Behind' by 3rd Grade 'May As Well Drop Out'

Children who don’t get a pre-kindergarten education, ideally from birth to age 5, might fall behind and “may as well drop out” by third grade, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius said on Wednesday at an event to garner support for President Barack Obama's $75-billion proposal to increase pre-school enrollment across the country.

Incredible . . . you never heard of such nonsense until the teachers unions and the government took over the public schools in the late 80s. Absolute nonsense. Another attempt to remove our children from their parents before they can walk.

The only thing that consistently amazes me more than the amount of contempt our public servants have for those that they serve, is the fact that the American people as a whole continue to put up with it.

If she says it, it must be true.

Could it be that the per school is a substitute for parents and by the time they are in third grade the mojo has fallen to a point where can no longer keep up with kids from a real family environment?

Head start shows no significant difference after third grade.

No matter what they do, families without any structure will fail.

When Napoleon seizes the nine dogs for himself, it’s one of the early signs of his corrupt intentions. He takes them from their parents, Jessie and Bluebell, shortly after they are born, “saying that he would make himself responsible for their education,” and then raising them in isolation from the rest of the farm (3.12).

The dogs do not reappear until tension between Napoleon and Snowball reaches a breaking point. After it appears that Snowball has won the crowd, Napoleon lets out a whistle; “At this there was a terrible baying sound outside, and nine enormous dogs, wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn” (5.14). They drive Snowball off the farm. From this point on, the dogs are constantly with the pigs, intimidating and threatening the other animals to make sure that the pigs get their way. The narrator ironically notes, “It was noticed that they wagged their tails to him [Napoleon] in the same way as the other dogs had been used to do to Mr. Jones” (5.15). The end of the novel is already being foreshadowed; the pigs are becoming like their human predecessors.

And see, this is where you run into the roadblock with leftists and their underlying assumptions based in their religion of Humanism -

“yeah, people in the past have made mistakes with these policies, but we’re better humans today than they were then, and so we’ll do it right.”

So, no amount of example from past or from fiction will sway them from their agenda - because those examples don’t apply to them.

Latest data says that kids who engage in pre-school don't appear to derive any benefit from it that lasts beyond second grade. They'd get more out of playing around at home with their mothers or baby sitters.

Sibelius appears to have not read up on much.

First, that line is likely a straight-up lie to get people to support the federal government to spend billions on public education that will likley line union officials pockets. Second, if the line is true, the children are likely not that far behind their peers because they didn't attend pre-K education. Instead, their peers who had pre-K education are likely further ahead because: (1) parents who place kids in pre-K generally also stress learning even outside school; and (2) parents who place kids in pre-K generally are more affluent because they're of good genetic stock that allowed them to succeed. They then passed those good genes onto their children.

nice encouragement to offer the 5th grade teaches who have done such an excellent job of meeting NCLB standards at least in our school

if the schools would start hiring competent principals, not hiring incompentent assistant principals, and start expelling juvies into boot camp schools at grade 6 it would help everyone

(stopping the pop tart free breakfasts would also help)

As far as I can tell Pre-k is just a warehouse for kids, or, in a kinder light, an extended play-date for them, while the parents work. No educatin’ goes on.

Bull$hit. Study after study has shown that any gains from pre K are completely erased by the 3rd grade and there is NO DIFFERENCE between pre K kids and non pre K kids. The Rats want to pour more money down that rat hole to get more union teachers on the payroll.

If the indoctrination is not started and going full bore by age five, then the child may be hopelessly lost from the New Unity of America being formed in the geographic area once known as “the United States of America”.

Parents who home-school are the vanguard of the new terrorists.

There are more “red” Congressional districts in the US than “blue” districts, and they have the advantage of being nearly all contiguous. Let your Congress-critter know what your feelings are on this subject.

"Head Start" is a fraud that helps not at all and may actually reduce the desire and ability of a child to learn.

However in "they might as well drop out" she is just parroting what the teachers have told me. They rarely will bother to try to bring a child that is falling behind up to speed. Usually they will simply hang the label “learning disabled” on them and shuffle them off to “special classes” where it is guaranteed that they will not learn a thing.

FWIW, back when I was five years old, the first school opportunity was kindergarten, it was optional, and it was half day. I think it was that way until at least the mid-1970s.

So now the feds are spending billions of dollars on elaborately and expensively financed full day pre-schools and kindergarten Meanwhile, kids leave high school with no shop-type (employable) skills and the need for a mostly inadequate college education they can't afford.

Brilliant social planning, isn't it? (sarcasm)

What would my solution be for the underclass? Half-day pre schools that the parents could attend with their kids for the under-class. Otherwise, go back to daycare options for working parents of toddlers.

They’ve actually showed that kids who go to Head Start show a slight improvement over non-Head Start kids when they enter regular grade school...but they lose it all within about a year. In other words, it’s the schools that are the problem, along with the degraded home environment provided by welfare baby mommas and their revolving boy-friend collections. Head Start improved them only because it took them out of that environment for most of the day and also kept them away from the older and already bad kids in regular school.

This is to push Obama’s birth to 5 government pre-school. Obama tried a similar legislation called zero to five as a senator.

I can’t remember what Obama exactly said but something like we can brainwash them easier if we get them away from their parents young.

My daughter home-schools. I don’t believe her second could read before age 7. She reads very well now at 10. Lisa’a first at age 12 scored above 90th percentile in the ACT, the American College Test taken by many high schoolers. I wonder how the Secretary would fix that.
