The California High-Speed Rail Authority won approval Thursday from a federal railroad oversight board to start construction this summer on the first leg of what would be the nation's first bullet train.
In a 67-page decision issued Thursday, the Surface Transportation Board ruled 2-1 that the state could begin work on the first 65 miles of the project from Merced to Fresno, as long as it maintains the current route and follows through on promises to mitigate damage to the environment caused by construction.
The STB's ruling removes a key hurdle for the rail authority to start construction of the $68 billion system in the Central Valley. A ruling against the state could have caused substantial delays and cost overruns for the project, which is under tight federal construction deadlines to collect billions of dollars in federal matching grants.
The unions and all the politicians who get paid off along the way.
CA will need to close it down and pay back the money since it's being obtained under fraudulent pretenses.

So far I haven seen the one thing that will kill the high speed train line.
imagine being in a high speed train going 125 mph when an earthquake hits. Nothing major just a 5 on the scale.
How would the wreckage spread?
What happens to the current trains that run along that route? Will they be shut down during contruction and all the passengers forced on to the bus? Will they build parallel tracks?

Our taxpayer dollars at work...on a train to nowhere which will end up having to be subsidized. Maybe field workers will be whizzing around the state to see their relatives and support the whole system??? God! What a waste of money!!!

I forgot the main question: who wants to go from Merced to Fresno? San Francisco to Fresno makes more sense. Or, Oakland to Fresno.
Merced to Fresno takes about an hour by car. Who needs HSRail for that?

If environmentalists and the fed accept that then There is no reason why Keystone cannt go forward.
really fast, fixed path, 19th century technology. i know the locomotives are different, but the design concept is no different.
why anyone would build something new that has to be on rails and is so inflexible to additions and demographic changes and demands, is beyond me.
