SAN DIEGO An Army doctor who was sexually abused as a teenager by a scoutmaster in San Diego County sued the Boy Scouts of America Wednesday, alleging negligence.
In the suit, filed in Superior Court in Vista, Army Maj. Drew Belnap said he was plied with alcohol, then sexually assaulted by Scoutmaster John Atwood in 1991 while Belnap was attending Schoepe Scout Reservation at Lost Valley in Warner Springs. The camp is operated by the Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
Belnap was 15 when he met Atwood in 1989.
He must be a homophobic bigot.
This guy is almost 40. There should be a statute of limitations of 2 years after one turns 18 to make these claims. How does one defend themselves (espsecially an organization) against allegations which are 24 years old?
Yeah, let's bring more gays into the Scouts, what could possibly go wrong?
He was 17 and could not defend himself? Maybe he a bi-curious and now just looking for excuses.
Are you kidding with this? The Catholic Church has had to defend herself ad nauseum over the past 10 or so years against this very same thing, accusations by older folks against even older priests from when they were kids. Wake up...
And I will rage against it every time it comes up, whether with the Church, Scouts or whoever.
Why’d it take him 22 years?
While such should be deemed an atrocity, I’m with those who wonder why he waited so long to bring suit. How the hell does one defend itself against something over 20 years ago? How does an organization defend itself from a suit against one of its members from so long ago? Seems like we have gotten into the habit of suing the deepest pockets instead of bringing suit against the perp. Next thing, someone will sue the Boy Scouts because an Eagle Scout robs a store or some such.
And now they want to openly allow gay scout masters.
Their excuse is that the perversion was done by a ‘straight’ scout master and that ‘gays’ don’t do this.
Whyd it take him 22 years?>>>
He needs the money. Army doctors don’t get paid much.
