TUCSON Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer won a battle with state lawmakers this week, defying most other conservatives in her party to get a key component of President Obamas Medicaid expansion through the Legislature.
The Arizona Senate voted Thursday to approve the measure 18 to 11. That followed approval earlier this week by the state House of Representatives.
The issue had inflamed passions and divided the Legislature for weeks. Things came to a head Tuesday when Brewer called lawmakers into the Capitol in Phoenix for a surprise special session.

She is the Chris Christie of Arizona ... you never know what you will get on any given day. Seems to be a trend in many states.
When I see Republican politicians making concessions like this I have to wonder what NSA dirt is being used on them.
“Sorry, I could have let you have health coverage for free at no expense to our state but I have to take a stand against Obama-care instead so good luck to you, maybe you wont get sick, or your kids“
Look, the GOP house repealed Obama-care about 40 times in the House and lose seats in the last election.
‘Sorry pilgrims but the Calvary ran the wrong way and got lost so hold out to the last man woman and child and remember there is honor in death for the cause(Japanese motto 1945)’
Time to move on. I am not going after Brewer.
Either Obama has something on her or like most government types in the states, they can’t resist free money from Uncle Sugar.
The fun part will be when Uncle Sugar begins pulling the plug on this a few years down the road and the screaming starts to keep funding it out of state coffers instead.
No, she is not. This is an untenable situation for Brewer. And she has to find a way to take care of all the illegals that McCain is sending her way.
how to take care of the illegals? is this really so complicated for people??
once an illegal is determined to be in need of medical assistance... render aid, of course. we are the United States. BUT... while aid is rendered, interview to determine the nation of origin. once determined, verify with the country’s embassy... and once the patient is healthy enough for travel.. ship the individual home via coach class ticksts and $100 in their pocket for cab fair.
THEN... give the entire bill, plus 5%, to the embassy due in full within 30 days.
nonpayment would force closure and proceedings to the world court for redress (it is international financial issue)
before implementing such a policy, give a 30-60 day notice to the embassy so they can get their people out
BTW, a similar policy should be in force when dealing with law breakers.
I think it was the ‘free’ money. But ‘free’ money is like ‘free’ healthcare. It REALLY costs those who work for a living. I am appalled that Brewer used Democrat talking points when describing Republicans as the ‘Party of no’. Reagan would be weeping now.
Not my state so not my battle but I do feel bad for those in Arizona who she betrayed.
Personally, I see the governor as fulfilling the voters’ mandate to provide Medicaid coverage to eligible poor residents. That mandate was over-ridden two years ago by the legislature which dropped poor, childless adults from Medicaid coverage due to recession budget constraints.
From its pre-statehood territorial days, Arizona had a safety net to provide healthcare to the poor. It was law that counties had that financial responsibility. Arizona was the last state to start participating in Medicaid, starting in 1982.
Poor childless adults were excluded from the states Medicaid program until about ten years ago, so the county safety net continued to provide and pay for care provided to poor childless adults. However, voters then approved two propositions to cover poor childless adults under Medicaid, and county financial responsibility for their care was eliminated with a resulting change in the law.
Two or three years ago, faced with serious budget deficits, the state essentially dropped coverage for poor childless adults despite the earlier voter approved Medicaid for them. For the first time in generations, those people had no fall back coverage if they became uninsured.
All of the above had nothing to do with Obamacare. A couple hundred thousand poor were dropped for two years from the states Medicaid program despite earlier voter approval for their inclusion.
It has been a disaster for the poor with illness these past two years. The governor recognizes this and wants to restore the earlier program. The earlier program made people eligible for treatment if their income were below 100% of the federal poverty level, and that is the level that the governor wanted to restore.
Where ObamaCare comes into this picture is that it requires setting the income eligibility level at 138% of the federal poverty level instead of 100%. It is 138% or nothing, which sucks.
Arizona taxpayers will continue to pay for Medicaid services in the other states and must decide whether it will also receive the Medicaid funded services locally for poor childless adults - or - will instead pay twice by also paying higher private insurance rates (a tax on the insured) to make up the losses from doctors and hospitals as a result of no Medicaid for poor childless adults.
The governor’s goal was to restore Medicaid for the poor, as directed previously by voters. Obamacare then required that more people be included - the difference between 100% and 138% of the Federal poverty level.
Except from the Democrats. THEY seem to be able to be dependable.
Never heard that before ... and I like it ... a lot.
Thanks for clearing that up.
Good synopsis! Thank you!
jan has been extremely tough against obama, seriously. i wonder if the metdata finally paid off for barry.
What is so hard to figure out. Obama has her emails. She cooperates, the emails don’t go public.
Don’t wonder. That is what is happening.
Hmmm. It’s hard to say. If she has been a RINO in the past, it may just be that creeping back again.
Do we have a country anymore? Seems like the lunatics are running the asylum.
May as well just rename it to the Politburo and look for the guards goosestepping in Red Square.
From traitors in the GOPe to misuse of the Federal Gov’t; one really has to wonder.
Bob Carol Ted and Alice the regime is using commie tactics to force the promising into submission.
amazing what common sense sounds like when you read it, isn’t it
Everything has gone stark, raving MAD! I know Jan doesn't want to do this, that she is pushed into a corner.
She's not a Cristie.
Maxine Waters knows what's going on and she's excited about it.
seems that have found dirt on her and now are black mailing her because the same Brewer two years ago would have got her middle finger to obama
Many millions of Americans wouldn’t mind a Politburo if they knew what it was and thought it was there to “take care” of them. Millions think Obama care means free medical care for all.
—thank you for that explanation; she is in a unique position as well being a “border” state and does not strike me as the type of person to just ‘go-along’ with OBC...
I guess they found out Brewer is a closet something. Must be
that its mandatory that politicians must have some form of
perversion or another. Could be that during he night of the
Benghazi attack Obama was practicing his.
“Two or three years ago, faced with serious budget deficits,”
“All of the above had nothing to do with Obamacare. A couple hundred thousand poor were dropped for two years from the states Medicaid program despite earlier voter approval for their inclusion.”
Sounds like a perfect setup. This way the tards get
Obamacare and Brewer saves face. Either way she caved to
the commietards and is now one of their pawns just
like Christi. Obamas evil is strong. She’ll sell out
Arpaio next because another liberal foothold has been
established in Arizona.
Both parties suck. Both parties are out for what they can gain for themselves. If it buys a vote, they are for it. They don’t care about the people who work and pay the bills in this nation. I don’t give a rat’s hip pockets for EITHER party or the fools in either party. I am sick of them all. I have taken to caring about the local issues in my county and state. I am tired of worrying about the national issues because there is absolutely nothing we can do about them. The idiots of the RINO party in Sodom on the Potomac don’t care about us. Only about staying in office and power. I’m sick of the entire mob of them.
Thanks for the common sense. No one has done more to confront the dear leader head-on than Ms. Brewer. What more is she supposed to do - raise an army ?
I'm not sure there's much we can do at this point. It appears the majority of D.C. is pushing hard toward an agenda to reform America.
Three more years of Obozo? Look at what's happened in 4 1/2, particularly in the last 6 months.
Among all the scandals, there is ONE huge scandal. It is called Conspiracy.
All this scandal info poured out in rapid succession on the America people...months AFTER the election.
There has been an enormous conspiracy to get Obozo back into the white house. There are scores of people up in D.C. that knew all of this info months if not years before this election....and hid it from the American people.
If all this had come out months before the election...this big eared bozo would never been elected.
Three and a half more years of this cronyism up there in D.C., I'm not sure this country will be quite as civil.
Just my take.
One thing we can doi is dedicate ourselves to recruiting or converting one new voter for conservative causes. One agnostic, one 18 year old, one disgruntled union member...
This about it -if every one on this board converted just one voter the ripple effect would probably spread to at least 1/2 as many more and we'd soon equal the number Romney would have needed to win.
It should be everyone's goal to dump every liberal and RINO possible in 2014.
That's where we start.
If illegal amnesty thing passes, all of this won't matter. Conservatives will be outnumbered as a voting block.
Evidence of this is found in the last few presidential elections. Our country is pretty evenly split between dems and pubs.
With millions of low income messy-cans given legal status, they will be eligible to bring up to four of their family members here after amnesty. Not being ugly, but do the math.
It would be done.
Thank you for the clear explanation. This is what FR is all about: as your name implies...getting the truth!
Sounds like she did the right thing according to how the citizens had already voted.
The sick and poor need to be weeded out...if the immediate family, or its community can’t solve the problem...why should a stranger to the situation be forced to pick up the tab?
Make it the family’s project or the community via a church...ABOLISH all the government employers and employees that are needed to support the sick and poor parasites...
I agree with you.
Politicians by tradition “triangulate” and play the “moderate’ to insure their re-election.
Bill Clinton was willing to go part of the way with Newt Gingrich in 1995 on his way to re-election in 1996.
That meant signing “welfare reform” legislation and the Defense of Marriage Act.
Jan Brewer thinks the right thing to do politically is to expand Medicaid.
You defend Brewer’s actions but many find it hard to support them because while you see a leader following the will of those who elected her I see a calculating politician just like I saw in Bill Clinton back in 1995.
Where do we end up at the end of the day when the politics of “the possible” or “triangulation” is used by our elected officials?
We end up further in the direction of bigger government, less freedom and a totalitarian state at this point in our nations history.
Chris Christie is playing this game big time now for his re-election along with Marco Rubio on immigration and so on........
I find it all thoroughly disgusting and I am reflecting on what the alternative is.
Maybe its some sort of resistance because it appears from history that movements involving resistance have the potential to change things to go the way you want them to go.
Politics as usual is moving this country in the wrong direction that’s for sure.
>> Look, the GOP house repealed Obama-care about 40 times in the House and lose seats in the last election.
The last election was a General that reelected the incumbent Democrat. That’s the reason for the R losses in the House.
Healthcare is the financial mess (and excess) it is today because of longstanding governmental involvement in controlling delivery, protecting franchises, dictating benefits, industry capture of regulators, limitations on innovation, etc.
In my opinion, our challenge in the years ahead - given massive unfunded liabilities for Medicare - and given the huge baby boomer cohort moving into retirement - is huge. We do need to move toward more market-based solutions at the state level where we can experiment, innovate and learn.
In making that transition in the direction of less govt and more market, we should not, in my view, just throw the poorest under the bus. We’ve made them dependent over decades, and just dropping their coverage when they are seriously ill seems wrong to me.
I have never seen a church willing to pick up major hospital costs; never. It is certainly not going to solve much of the problem even if a few churches were willing and able to do so ( and I love self dependence and private charity!)
Getting out of the Mega Welfare State without a collapse is not going to be easy, for sure... In the meantime, the financial system is stealing from the responsible saver class and dramatically subsidizing the speculator class through the Fed, the big banks, and easy money QE. Top that off with a corrupt executive, legislative and judicial government which has become a law unto itself, and it is hard to not be discouraged by it all.
“In the last days, men’s hearts will fail them... “ Yup!
Well I’ll go after her.
On balance she’s been pretty good but she’s a dumb ***** sometimes.
She also signed a tax hike in her first term.
IT’s 4 FED dollars for 1 State dollar! What would you do?
Pay the five?
I wouldn’t need or want a bunch of federal funds cause I’d slash spending.
You are correct, it was/is a “catch22” for her. Under the circumstances, and in her state, it is most likely her best option.
You and people like you are the reason this country has gone down the drain. Cutting slack to sellouts because they have a R next to their name just encourages them and now we have the current GOP that is nearly indistinguishable from the Marxist Democrats.
Do really think such is required to get a politician to flip-flop, “compromise” or otherwise do something out of character? This crap has been happening since long before NSA existed.
